Sting and Friends Sing for Trees
Consider Carnival! a soundtrack to save trees by.
And if trees are being saved, you know Sting can't be far away. In fact, the album, released nationwide Tuesday, coincides with the 10th anniversary of Sting's first trip to the Amazon rainforests. This collection was spearheaded by Mrs. Sting, Trudie Styler, who originally turned her hubby on to the deforestation crisis.
"The people who hold our future in their hands, the people who need to be educated, whom we need to reach out to, are our own children. It is for our children that we need to save the rainforests from destruction, and it will be up to our children in the future to continue this work," Styler says in the liner notes.
Despite the title and dedication to kids of the world, these aren't your typical "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah" tunes. Most follow the lead of the ever-earnest Sting and are appropriately somber for such a cause celebre. There are some exceptions: classical pianists Katia and Marielle Labèque contribute the appropriate song cycle "Le Carnaval des Animaux"; Pavarotti performs the Italian Christmas standard "Tu scendi dalle stelle"; Taylor croons "I Bought Me a Cat" and Tina Turner leads an insufferable version (is there any other kind?) of "Row, Row, Row Your Boat."

The album has a mixed pedigree--we get rock, classical, pop, world music and folk from Europe, the Americas and Africa-- but Carnival!'s ensemble manages to present a unified album. There are standout tracks from Sting and pal Jimmy Nail, the Chieftains, Paul Simon, Elton John, Midler, the Labeques, Pavarotti, Annie Lennox, Shawn Colvin, Johnny Clegg, Ruben Blades, African singer Geoffrey Oryema, Italian singer Zucchero and Sharon Katz and the Peace Train.

The beneficiary of the album is the International Rainforest Foundation. The Stings and some of their green music-making pals will also convene at Carnegie Hall Wednesday night for the annual concert that also benefits the tree-hugging foundation.
