It was the summer of love all over again for members of The Who.

Celebrities including Sean Penn, Rainn Wilson and Adam Sandler paid tribute to the legendary rock band at the taping of the third annual VH1 Rock Honors on Saturday night in Los Angeles.

Founding Who guitarist Pete Townshend and singer Roger Daltrey were on hand for the festivities and performed such classics as "My Generation," "Who Are You" and "Teenage Wasteland." Original drummer Keith Moon died in London in 1978 and founding bassist John Entwistle died in Las Vegas in 2002.

Pearl Jam, The Foo Fighters, Incubus, The Flaming Lips and Tenacious D also performed some of The Who's biggest hits.

"It's an honor to honor what I consider to be the greatest band of all time," Tenacious D frontman Jack Black told the crowd. "Wanna know why they were the greatest? Because they were the first ones to really rock hard."

VH1 will air the special on Thursday, July 17.
