Stabbing at Five for Fighting House
Where's Superman when you need him?
A burglary gone awry at the home of Five for Fighting's frontman John Ondrasik ended with one man hospitalized with stab wounds.
The attack took place Wednesday night in Ondrasik's Encino, California, residence, and left the home's caretaker hospitalized with more than a dozen stab wounds, police said.
Ondrasik, who was in Las Vegas, cut his trip short and flew back to Los Angeles upon hearing the news. He was interviewed by investigators Thursday.
His housesitter, 44-year-old Carlos Canton, was listed in serious condition at a nearby hospital with stab wounds to the chest, face and back.
Canton's 34-year-old wife, Alba, suffered a scratch on her wrist in a tussle with the assailant, who got out via a side door, leaving a trail of his own blood.
The intruder, described by police as a white or Latino male, stocky build, about 5-foot-10 and 180-220 pounds, remains on the loose.
According to the police report, the intruder, dressed in dark clothing, possibly a security guard uniform, surprised the Cantons by hiding in the bedroom of one of Ondrasik's kids.
The attacker apparently was able to gain entry into the singer's San Fernando Valley home through a doggie door while Canton's wife was out walking Ondrasik's pooch.
The Cantons had been hired by Ondrasik to look after his home and his dog, an Akita-Chow mix, while the singer was away.
Police say the house's security system had been disarmed earlier by construction workers, who had installed new windows and doors.
Police think the Cantons probably stumbled upon the suspect in the process of a burglary. Local media reports say there had been other robberies in the area in recent weeks.
According to the syndicated series Celebrity Justice, the neighborhood in which the singer-songwriter lives is something of a celebrity enclave; Ondrasik's neighbors include the likes of Ray Romano, Edward James Olmos and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen.
The neighborhood's also no stranger to tragedy. A block away from the Ondrasik's place is the home where Phil Hartman was murdered in 1998 by his wife, who subsequently committed suicide.
Ondrasik's rep at Sony Records did not immediately return calls seeking comment.
Five for Fighting, essentially Ondrasik's one-man band, is best known for the ubiquitous Grammy-nominated piano ballad "Superman (It's Not Easy)" off 2001's platinum-selling American Town. The tune became a huge hit in the wake of the September 11 terror attacks.
The band's latest release, The Battle for Everything, hit stores earlier this year.
