Springsteen: Still Married in the U.S.A.
Please, no more stories about the Boss' wife.
Bruce Springsteen has has taken the unusual step of venturing online to address a personal matter via his Website, which is typically a sounding board for music news and the rocker's pet causes.
The 13-time Grammy winner posted a note Monday refuting tabloid-spread rumors about the so-called rocky state of his 15-year marriage to singer and band mate Patti Scialfa.
"I hesitate to use this Website for anything personal believing it should remain a place where fans of my music can come free of the distractions that occasionally arise with the rest of my job," the New Jersey-bred rock icon wrote.
"However, due to the unfounded and ugly rumors that have appeared in the papers over the last few days, I felt they shouldn?t pass without comment. Patti and I have been together for 18 years--the best 18 years of my life. We have built a beautiful family we love and want to protect and our commitment to one another remains as strong as the day we were married."
Citing unnamed sources, the New York Post reported Thursday that Springsteen and Scialfa were already separated and on their way to making the split permanent, mainly due to an alleged relationship that was supposedly blossoming between Springsteen and a widow he met while organizing the America: A Tribute to Heroes telethon whose husband had been killed on 9-11.
Another "friend" of the couple told the Post, however, that "Bruce and Patti are very much partners. They go at it a lot and fight, but they also work at it a lot...Patti is a strong woman. They are not going anywhere."
Springsteen, 56, and Scialfa, 53, tied the knot in 1991 and have three children. The Born to Run rocker was still married to actress Julianne Phillips when he and Scialfa started seeing each other in 1987, when Scialfa was a backup singer touring with Springsteen, which in turn led to his 1989 divorce.
Aside from a little damage control, Springsteen and Scialfa are heading to Bologna, Italy, Oct. 1 to kick off the international leg of his tour in support of his latest release, We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions.
Two days later, a new CD/DVD version of the album will drop, featuring five new songs along with video from the tour. Also due out around the same time: a new biography about Springsteen and the E Street Band. Greetings from E Street is the first book about the group as a whole that the band members actually collaborated on.
