Springsteen Not Born to Run
Just ask Bruce Springsteen: Two days after political activists in New Jersey began circulating a petition to enlist their state's favorite hometown rocker for a U.S. Senate bid, the Boss himself says it ain't happening.
"If nominated, I will not run. If elected I will not serve," Springsteen said in a statement Friday, repeating the famous 1884 quote from U.S. General William Tecumseh Sherman when he refused the GOP nomination for president.
In what some New Jerseyans hoped would be the biggest political crossover for an artist since, well, Sonny Bono, a group calling itself "Independence for New Jersey" launched a signature drive Tuesday seeking support for Bruuuuuuuuce as an independent candidate.
Led by Doug Friedline--who aided former wrestler Jesse Ventura in his successful bid to become Minnesota governor--the campaign is using its own Website, DrafttheBoss2002.com in the hopes Springsteen would rise up to the idea of heading to Capitol Hill. Friedline and others are unhappy with both the incumbent, Democratic Senator Robert Torricelli, and the potential Republican candidates, so they're trying to pull together 800 signatures by June 4 to get the rock 'n' roll legend (and Monmouth County resident) on the ballot.
Despite Springsteen's statement to the contrary, Friedline isn't giving up.
"Just because [Springsteen's publicists] posted this quote that's 140 years old doesn't mean it's over," Friedline told the New York Daily News. "I have some people behind the scenes that know the Boss, and we believe it's not dead yet.
"Springsteen is a very private man, but he does a lot for the community, he gets involved in issues and is passionate about life in New Jersey," he added. "He's done major fund-raisers and benefits. This guy could actually win."
No word yet on whether Friedline is eyeing Jon Bon Jovi as a possible backup candidate.
Meantime, the 52-year-old Springsteen has other civic duties to worry about--namely finishing up work on his much-anticipated new album with the E Street Band. Earlier this week, Sony execs got a five-song preview of the new disc, featuring songs titled "Mary's Place," "Nothing Man," "The Rising," "Lonesome Day," and "Into the Fire."
No word yet on a release date for the album, or a title.
