Splitsville for Luke and Laura!
Luke and Laura Spencer are set to ink their divorce papers Monday, marking the end of a tumultuous, but never dull, 20-year-old union.
The on-again, off-again romance of General Hospital's once hottest twosome has survived numerous on-screen plot twists and the off-screen defection and return of both stars, Anthony Geary and Genie Francis.
Their marriage was witnessed by some 30 million fans, who dutifully tuned in November 16, 1981, to witness the nuptials as then-frizzy-haired Luke exchanged "I dos" with Laura, beaming beneath her beaded veil. It was daytime television's top-rated event.
Since then fans--like the Spencers--have suffered through a number of separations. Only a year after becoming a bride, Francis left the show, leaving Laura the apparent victim of a drowning. When the star decided to come back, it turned out Laura had only been kidnapped (whew). However, by that time, Geary was on his way out the door, so their reunion was brief. Francis didn't stick around after he went. Fans had to survive the long, lean "Non L&L Years" when the couple were supposedly traveling the world.
Geary returned in 1991, but only as Luke's cousin, Bill Eckert. Then, when Francis agreed to give it another go, he reverted to being Luke. But the lovey-dovey get-together came to an end in 1998, when the couple separated. That was also the year when their teenage son, Lucky, and Laura's son, Nikolas, got into a beef about the disco date-rape incident that had sparked the couple's initial elopement, after several years of youthful dalliance and Laura's teenage marriage to another man.
Got all that?
Anyhow, they've taken their time about making the divorce official, but fans seem to have been caught unaware by the sudden denouement.
The ABC sudser continues to consistently rank as the highest-rated daytime drama with women 18-49. Devotees have been given the weekend to mull over their feelings and commue on their Websites. Laura took the papers over to Luke for his signature on Friday. But, as the ABC Website describes it, "as he searched for a pen, Luke found all sorts of reminders from their life together." So they "reminisced about all the good times" and "marveled about how far they had come."
The tease continued with Luke saying if he signed, "it would mean they were over and that was like seeing the end of an era."
There will be more reminiscence Monday, including what ABC calls "a moving and emotional montage," during which the couple will acknowledge the end of their marriage with "love and admiration in their eyes, but with hope for their future."
ABC says both actors will continue to appear on the show. After all, Luke also found time Friday to try to persuade Felicia to give him a second chance, and Laura kissed Scott.
"It's daytime TV," publicist Kelsey Martinez tells USA Today. "Anything can happen."
And for those of you not interested in the Luke-Laura split, there's other big goings-on Monday on General Hospital: The 8th Annual Nurses Ball begins.
