Spielberg Saving Private Property
No, we're not talking A.I.--we mean the director's controversial horse-riding haven.
Hollywood's most famous filmmaker, who planned to build a 27,000-square-foot domed equestrian palace for his horse-loving wife, actress Kate Capshaw, has drastically revamped his riding ring to placate homeowners upset that the complex would destroy the leafy setting--not to mention property values--of their posh Brentwood neighborhood.
The 54-year-old director bought the land in 1999 for $5.75 million and conceived of the $7 million project as a little gift to Capshaw. But after the building plans were disclosed by the Los Angeles Times last December, what began as a one-ring riding center turned into a three-ring circus.
Residents complained that the towering five-story indoor structure, complete with a retractable roof, as well as a three-story guardhouse and a main residence all crammed on the 2.8-acre plot would ruin the rustic charm of the area. The riding ring alone--about half the size of a football field--would stand six times larger than most nearby homes. Some even took to calling the complex the "Temple of Doom."
Spielberg decided not to horse around with his neighbors' goodwill and withdrew the applications just days before the project was to go before the Los Angeles zoning administration for approval. He also hired a new design team to come up with blueprints that would satisfy everyone.
"It was always Kate and Steven's attempts to try and meet with the neighbors and address the concerns that they have," said Spielberg's rep, Andy Spahn. "All of them are now aboard and fully supportive."
The new plans did away with the retractable dome roof, the guardhouse and an 8-foot high sliding gate at the property's entrance. The structure will now be a simple 24,000-square-foot outdoor riding ring with a 6-foot-high front gate.
Now that the scaled-back equine edifice has gotten the thumbs up from neighbors, construction is scheduled to begin in late September and should last about 18 months.
