Spider-Man's Latest Villain Shrouded in Mystery

Looks like we know who Spidey will be battling up on the big screen...sort of.

The studios behind the webbed superhero's reboot announced today that actor Rhys Ifans will join the cast as the movie's villain. Just one minor detail was missing from the announcement...

The actual character Ifans will play!

We learned last week that Emma Stone had been cast to star as Gwen Stacy, the love interest of Andrew Garfield, who plays Peter Parker/Spider-Man. But with this announcement, the studio and even director Mark Webb remained mum on which evildoer our superhero would be taking on:

"What sets the Spider-Man villains apart is the complexity of their relationships with Peter Parker. Rhys' incredible ability to embody both warmth and rage makes him the ideal choice for this character."

"Warmth and rage"...hmmm, interesting clues.

So who do you think Ifans is going to play? We're betting the filmmakers will be looking for something new, something to separate this new installment from the previous three. And with news that Gwen Stacy will be the love interest, we can't help but think Jackal might be involved. After all, he did have a bit of a crush on Gwen. OK, make that a full-on obsession.

Take our poll and sound off on which bad guy you think Ifans will play.
