Spider-Man 3: My Weekend with Some Real Heroes

Spider-Man 3 Columbia Pictures
I've been glued to the NBA playoffs, so I apologize for not having my usual list of flicks I catch on lazy Saturdays and Sundays. (I did peep a little bit of Grandma's Boy and Surviving the Game. Quality stuff.)

Me and my buddy Budish were engrossed in the Sox and Yanks (What up, Dad!) and all the hoops action. I also got to live it up with some golf and tennis (how regal of me) and popped bottles with the whole E! squadron.

And of course, I had the once-in-a-lifetime chance to sit and interview the cast of Spider-Man 3. The entire cast: Tobey, Kirsten, Topher, Tommy, Bryce, James, Mr. Raimi, errrybody. As a Spidey fan, a fan of big movies, a fan of films shot in NYC, this was a dream come true.

You can check out some of the interviews today, and all week, on Daily 10—and soon here in Lyons Den. But first, here's a little bit of what I learned.

Ben Lyons, Topher Grace E! Networks

1. One Premiere Trumps Them All:  Out of all the cities where Spider-Man 3 is premiering—Tokyo, London, Moscow, Berlin, Madrid, Rome—the general consensus among the cast is that one will be the best: Queens. The film already debuted in Japan, where the audience was made up of an older, even more business-minded crowd, and Franco says the only things he saw were the hotel and some sushi. Feels like he didn't even go there.

So, Queens is on the top of everybody's list, partly because it's the last stop on the World Spidey Tour. Not only does Spidey get a premiere in Peter Parker's backyard, but it's also part of Spider-Man Week in NYC, in conjunction with the Tribeca Film Festival. I'll be out there starting Wednesday, so check back for tons of Tribeca coverage. Love that festival.

2. Nobody Wants to Talk Spider-Man 4None of the cast seemed at all interested in discussing the future of the franchise. It's understandable, as their involvement or interest has been confirmed or denied. They don't want to say something they can't deliver on, right? I think on some level they might be a little unhappy about the early reports that the franchise will continue on, no matter what and no matter who is involved. Seriously, can you imagine Spidey 4 without Tobey, K.D. or Raimi?

Would you even care? I don't think I would.

Ben Lyons, James Franco E! Networks

3. When He's Not Avenging the Death of His Maniacal Supervillain Father, James Franco Enjoys Painting:  The piece you see him working on during Spidey 3, however, is not an original Franco. He told me he usually works on a larger type of canvas and paints in a more abstract style. He also once lived homeless in Santa Monica to prepare for his role opposite Robert De Niro in City by the Sea.

4. Topher Grace Can Do the Best Impression of Michael J. Fox I've Ever Seen:  Not that I've seen many, but this one is uncanny. Teen Wolf  is one of my all-time favorites, especially the last 10 minutes when he loses his wolf powers.

5. Debbie Harry Asked Kirsten Dunst to Play Her in a Future Biopic:  When I interviewed Elisha Cuthbert on the set of her upcoming film My Sassy Girl last winter in NYC, she told me that she has always dreamed of playing the Blondie frontwoman.

Who do you think makes the better Debbie Harry? Dunst or Cuthbert? And if you don't know who Debbie Harry is, please log off. You are not cool enough to read my daily scriptures.

6. Sam Raimi Has Not Decided to Do The Hobbit:  Or Spider-Man 4. Or any other big project seemingly associated with his name. He is, however, and has always been, a huge fan of the Three Stooges. Not so much as a brand that could be recast or reinvented, but more as simple affection for the three actors who comprised the legendary comedy trio.

7. Bad Guys Need Very Specific Cocktails:  The sand used to create a foundation for the villain Sandman (Thomas Haden Church) was made of a grain called Arizona and was mixed with individual kernels of corn to add consistency.

What else ya wanna know? Well, you're just going to have to sit tight, because we have so much more Spidey stuff on the horizon. Check back for videos and more posts.

And shout-out to the boy Shia: Two weeks atop the box office with Disturbia. Big things!
