Spector's Legal Eagle Swap

One good thing about being a celebrity on trial--you have access to all the A-list legal advice you could ever enlist.

Case in point: Record producer and accused murderer Phil Spector has just swapped out O.J. Simpson dream team leader Robert Shapiro for Menendez brother defender Leslie Abramson.

Abramson told reporters that she had been ready to hang up her hat on her legal practice but elected to take Spector's case because she considered him to be an icon in the music world.

She commented that she found no evidence that the music mogul is guilty of the charges against him.

Possibly in an effort to smooth any rift with Shapiro, she also stated that it is not uncommon for clients to reevaluate their defense strategy once charges are filed.

Abramson became arguably the most famous female attorney in the country during her defense of Lyle and Erik Menendez who were on trial for the murder of their parents.

Arguing that her clients killed their affluent parents in an "imperfect self-defense," Abramson earned deadlocked juries for each brother?a tremendous triumph. However, the Menendezes were later convicted in a second trial and both are serving life in prison with no possibility of parole.

Aiding Abramson in the Spector defense is Marcia Morrissey who also worked on the Menendez case and later defended Yosemite murderer Carey Stayner.

Spector, 63, is charged with the murder of Lana Clarkson, 40, whom he met for the first time on the night of her death on Feb. 3, 2003.

The duo apparently met at the House of Blues where Clarkson worked as a hostess. She agreed to go home with Spector for a "sexual encounter," according to court documents.

Spector's driver Adriano Desouza dropped the pair off at the producer's suburban Los Angeles mansion at around 3:30 a.m. and returned at 5 a.m., at which point he heard a single shot. He ran into a dazed Spector who told him he thought he had just shot Clarkson.

When police arrived, Spector refused to take his hands out of his pockets, inciting them to use a stun gun on the producer before placing him under arrest.

Spector was freed on $1 million bail. He pleaded innocent to the charges against him and has suggested that Clarkson committed suicide.

If convicted on the murder count, Spector faces a possible life sentence.
