Spector Sues, Gets Trial Date

Early next year, Phil Spector will finally have to face the music.

The famed music producer's murder trial will likely begin in January, a Los Angeles judge said Monday at a preliminary hearing.

Spector was present at the hearing in downtown Los Angeles, where Superior Court Judge Larry Paul Fidler set dates for pretrial motions in the case for Oct. 27 and Oct. 28.

Spector did not speak during Monday's brief courtroom appearance other than to waive his Sixth Amendment right to a speedy trial.

In February, a judge set a Sept. 16 date for the trial to begin. However, a series of motions set forth by both prosecutors and Spector's legal reps have repeatedly pushed back the start date for the case.

The 65-year-old music producer, known for his "Wall of Sound" recording technique employed on hits like "Be My Baby" from 1960s act the Ronettes, remains free on $1 million bail and has maintained he had nothing to do with the shooting death of B-movie actress Lana Clarkson over two years ago.

Clarkson, 40, died of a gunshot wound inflicted inside Spector's suburban Los Angeles mansion on Feb. 3, 2003.

Spector has claimed the Barbarian Queen star "kissed the gun" as he watched.

The New York-born producer was indicted on first-degree murder charges by a Los Angeles grand jury one year ago.

Meanwhile, the "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" producer filed suit last week against a financial associate of four-and-a-half years, Michelle Blaine, alleging she embezzled hundreds of thousands of dollars from him via fraudulent schemes.

Per his suit, filed in Los Angeles Superior court, Spector claims Blaine, operating as an agent for two companies she runs (BT Productions and 3:15 Productions), took out a loan valued at $425,000 from Spector's pension plan without his permission.

He also stated in his suit that she stole money from his personal bank accounts via checks and debit cards. Spector claims that when he confronted her about the unauthorized withdrawals, she copped to her theft and agreed to pay back the money she stole from him.

It's been a busy year for Spector's cadre of attorneys. In addition to his freshly filed suit, he was sued in February by Clarkson's mother, Donna Clarkson.

The mother of the slain actress filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Spector on the eve of the two-year anniversary of her daughter's death.
