Sources: Latest Bust Jeopardizes Lohan Career
Bad PR, countless court appearances and possibly jail may not be the only consequences of Lindsay Lohan's latest legal misadventure.
Sources tell E! Online that Tuesday's arrest for driving under the influence and cocaine possession could ultimately cost Lohan a new movie role.
For the time being, producers of Dare to Love Me are publicly sticking with the actress.
"Bowline Entertainment is standing behind Lindsay. Lindsay is insured for the movie as of now," says Michael Sands, a publicist for the production company.
Sands, who described the film as set in the 1930s, says Lohan had been scheduled to fly to Romania to shoot for about three weeks. The actress had been taking tango lessons in advance of the film, and an official announcement about her casting was expected later this week.
However, behind the scenes, the situation is unsettled.
"The talk this morning is that Lindsay will never hold on to her role in Dare to Love Me," says a source close to the production. "It was a risk to sign her in the first place. But everyone hoped rehab would really get her on the right path again and focused on her career. Looks like that wasn't the case."
Lohan's attorney, Blair Berk, released a brief statement saying the actress is "presently receiving medical care"—whether that entails a potentially production-delaying trip to rehab is unclear.
Lohan lost her last role, a part in the indie drama Poor Things opposite Oscar winners Olympia Dukakis and Shirley MacLaine after she was spotting partying in Las Vegas in the hours after her release from Promises rehab facility earlier this month.
"It was already difficult for the producers to pull together the money they needed to make that movie happen," reveals a source close to Poor Things.
As with the Dare to Love Me brain trust, producers of Poor Things announced their support of Lohan shortly after her May arrest for DUI and even postponed the start date to accommodate her 45-day stint at Promises.
"But the last straw was when Lohan went to Vegas. The bond company for the movie said forget it," the production source says.
Now, the Poor Things team is hoping to recast Lohan's part and continue with the project as soon as possible.
"The movie has not been canceled," our source said. "Just postponed."
As for future movie projects for Lindsay, "that's going to be real difficult," says a casting specialist. "She will have to basically be willing to pay for her own insurance on the set of any movie. And that's if movie execs want to deal with that hassle. If they do, it will cost Lindsay a lot. That stuff is not cheap. It would be a big chunk of whatever paycheck she would be earning from a set."
Lohan had been due on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno later Tuesday to tout her film I Know Who Killed Me, but that appearance was scuttled in the wake of her arrest. With the horror film set for a Friday release, producers must scramble to figure out how to market a movie without support from its star.
The actress shot substantial parts of I Know Who Killed Me in January while receiving treatment at another Los Angeles-area rehab facility, Wonderland.
Lohan has one other movie in the can, Chapter 27, in which she plays a lover of John Lennon killer Mark David Chapman (Jared Leto). That film is expected in limited release later this year, but no date has been set.
She last appeared in the family dramedy Georgia Rule with Jane Fonda and Felicity Huffman. During production, filmmakers publicly scolded Lohan and her handlers for the actress' party-hearty behavior, which impacted shooting.
Perhaps more disconcerting for would-be Lohan employers, the notoriety did nothing for ticket sales—Georgia Rule grossed a dismal $18.9 million domestically.
