Sorry, Suri: No Paternity Leave for Papa
Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes may have held their tongues during Suri's birth, but that didn't stop them from holding each other.
"We were hugging each other like we always do," Cruise told ABC's 20/20 in an interview scheduled to air Friday. "It was everything that we wanted it to be."
And with that out of the way, the proud papa is back to work.
Just days after his "beautiful" daughter's "spiritual" and "powerful" entry into the world, Cruise has returned to the promotional trail, readying for the premiere of the upcoming Mission: Impossible III, which opens in wide release on May 5.
Cruise appeared with his fellow castmembers and director JJ Abrams to discuss the experience of making the blockbuster film, which was reportedly not the easiest of endeavors.
However, Cruise expressed nothing but confidence in the project, noting that the $100 million-plus budget was the highest Paramount Pictures had ever approved for a first-time director.
Abrams, the mastermind behind Lost and Alias, said he felt the third installment in the franchise was something of a departure from the first two films in that it delves into the human side of Cruise's hard-bitten character, Ethan Hunt.
"I really wanted to answer the question of what happens when this guy goes home," Abrams said. "Does he lie to his wife?"
Cruise's M:I3 costar Philip Seymour Hoffman, fresh off a Best Actor Oscar win for Capote, gave Abrams props for his smooth leadership skills.
"These things happen from the top down, and from the top there was a sense of humor and a confidence and competence that you don't question," Hoffman said.
Laurence Fishburne concurred, dismissing any concern over Abrams' lack of experience as a big-screen helmer.
"It's inaccurate to talk about JJ being a first-time anything," Fishburne said. "Just because he's telling stories on the little screen doesn't mean he shouldn't be telling stories on the big screen."
As for Cruise, he made it clear he was pleased with the action pic's end result.
"You know what? If there are couches and chandeliers, I'd be jumping up and down," he said. (We're guessing 20/20 staffers had strategically removed any furnishings that could have been easily damaged by an outbreak of exuberance.)
Now, back to the Suri show already in progress: Much has been made of the name Cruise and Holmes chose for their infant daughter, which they claim means "princess" in Hebrew and "red rose" in Persian. (Other sources have pointed out the name also means "pickpocket" in Japanese and was the acronym for what once was known as the Syracuse University Research Institute.)
However, native Hebrew speakers have expressed confusion over just how exactly Suri translates into "princess," a meaning that is more commonly associated with the name Sarah.
"Nobody here has ever really heard of it," an announcer on Israel's Army Radio said Thursday during a discussion on the baby's name.
"We seem to have learned a new Hebrew word--and from Tom Cruise, no less," said an anchorman on Israel's Channel 2 TV.
But television personality and noted Hebrew linguist Avshalom Koor had an explanation at the ready.
"Suri is a pet name for Sarah," Koor told Army Radio. "The Ashkenazi [Jews] of Poland and Hungary pronounce it Suri."
As do the Scientologists of Beverly Hills, apparently.
