SNL's Poehler Updates "Update"

Where is Jimmy Fallon when you need him?

Saturday Night Live debuted its first ever all-female "Weekend Update" team Saturday night to decidedly mixed reviews.

The season premiere of NBC's Saturday night staple featured returning cast member Amy Poehler replacing the recently departed Fallon. Fallon and Tina Fey had read the fake news together since 2000.

Poehler joined Fey on the popular "Update" segment, which has become arguably less funny over the last few years as shows like Comedy Central's Daily Show have stolen much of the fake news fire from the recurring SNL sketch.

While the line-up is fresh off its first foray into the new season, some fans of the show are already weighing in with some not-so-kind words for the sketch-comedy veteran.

"Amy just doesn't fit the part," lamented one fan on saturday-night-live.com's message board. "The jokes were all gimmicky and no one liner jokes. Also, not to sound sexist, but a duo 'Update' only works when you have both feminine and masculine energy."

Another fan on the site's message boards echoed those sentiments Sunday, saying, "Tina definitely should have gone solo. Amy does not fit the part at all, and the whole time I was like, no it looks to[sic] weird!!! Two girls? I really miss Jimmy...I was VERY disappointed with 'Update'--not that I had high expectations."

But not everyone thought Poehler missed the mark. "I thought she did a great job, she was funny," mused one instapundit on IMDB.com. "She did seem a little nervous at first, but it was her first time, you can't blame her."

Poehler certainly has her work cut out for her this season as the newest member of the venerable SNL fake news team. "Weekend Update" is one of SNL's most beloved recurring sketches, with Kevin Nealon, Norm MacDonald, and Chevy Chase among its alums.

But if anyone can take on the challenge of winning over a new generation of SNL fans, it may be Poehler.

A veteran of the NYC underground comedy scene, Poehler first rose to national prominence as a member of the NYC comedy collective Upright Citizen's Brigade.

The group, which opened up an improv theater space on 22nd Street in New York's Chelsea district, went on to become a Comedy Central show. While the show was cancelled after three seasons, Poehler had already earned a rep in comedy circles for her quick wit and sharp improv skills by the late 1990s.

Poehler joined the cast of SNL in January 2001 and recently turned in a performance in the Fey-penned comedy Mean Girls, with Lindsay Lohan.

Saturday Night Live, now in its 30th season, will air its second show of the new season Saturday with Queen Latifah pulling double duty as host and musical guest.
