Snipes Strikes Back at NYC

First Blade made mincemeat of the undead at the megaplex; now he's looking to unload on New York City.

Wesley Snipes sued the city Monday in an attempt to nullify an arrest warrant issued in March (but never acted upon by cops) relating to an Indiana-based paternity case.

The warrant, triggered by a Manhattan Family Court judge, was issued after Snipes twice failed to submit to a paternity test requested by an Indiana woman who claims the Blade: Trinity star fathered her young son, Israel.

The 42-year-old Snipes has a son and a daughter from two other relationships, but has denied sleeping with the Indiana woman, 33-year-old Lanise Pettis.

Snipes' lawyer, Robert Bernhoft, contends that, because the actor is a legal resident of Orlando, the city of New York has no jurisdiction in the case and cannot compel him to submit to a DNA test as requested by Indiana authorities.

The complaint further alleges the woman at the heart of the paternity dispute, Pettis, is a mentally ill former crack addict and prostitute who is obsessed with celebrities and has made similar claims involving Prince, Oprah Winfrey and former President Bill Clinton.

Snipes says he never met Pettis, but the woman insists she has known the actor "all her life" and wants a court to confirm the results of an alleged sexual episode straight out of New Jack City with Snipes and Pettis rendezvousing in a Chicago crackhouse circa 2000.

"I would have thought that anyone who has denied it to the hilt would have done anything to clear his name," Pettis told the New York Post earlier this year. But Snipes has so far been unwilling to give Indiana or New York authorities his blood for a DNA test.

Emily Sweet, a lawyer for the city, says she could not comment on the pending litigation. A hearing on Snipes' gripe is scheduled for Wednesday.

The lawsuit also names LaPorte County, Indiana, as a defendant in the case. LaPorte County prosecutors Robert Beckman and his wife, Priscilla Jo Beckman, are specifically singled out in the suit for trying to collar Snipes on what the actor's lawyer calls the "fantastical" claims of an "obviously delusional" woman.

Snipes has been taking a beating in the PR department this year. Aside from Pettis' public accusations, a former flame of Halle Berry claimed Snipes once beat the actress, causing her to partially lose her hearing. Snipes never responded to the claims, which were made by R&B singer Christopher Williams.

Snipes' latest film, Blade: Trinity, has been performing solidly at the box office, taking in more than $35 million in two weeks.

Snipes has two other projects in the pipeline for next year, the cop drama Chaos and the heist flick 7 Seconds.
