Sixties Singing Stars Sick
It's a bad health week for 1960s music makers.
Both Mary Travers, of Peter, Paul and Mary fame, and Brit pop vocalist Marianne Faithfull are in sick bay.
Travers, the 67-year-old female contingent of the iconic folk trio, has announced that she is receiving treatment for leukemia. She is currently undergoing chemotherapy, but publicist Ken Sunshine says Travers is optimistic and expects a full recovery.
"Mary looks forward to touring again with the trio soon, and is grateful for the well wishes that have come to her from all over the world," read the statement released Tuesday.
Faithfull is also under the weather. She recently pulled the plug on a European tour after collapsing last Wednesday on stage in Milan. Doctors diagnosed her with chronic exhaustion and have ordered her on three months' bed rest.
"I'm sorry to have let my fans down but I will be back," Faithfull said in a statement.
As a result of the medical advice, Faithfull's upcoming shows in London, Glasgow, Dublin, Barcelona, Amsterdam and Vienna have been postponed.
Prior to the cancer news, Travers and bandmates Peter Yarrow and Noel Paul Stookey have been enjoying a revival of sorts. Carry It On, a five-disc box album of greatest hits, including "Puff, The Magic Dragon" and "Blowin' in the Wind," was released in February to much acclaim.
They were also on track for a spring 2005 tour, which is set to begin in February in Las Vegas, according to the www.peterpaulandmary.com. The site has not posted any updated information on the status of the concert dates in the wake of Travers' announcement.
Faithfull, the 57-year-old ex of Mick Jagger and best known for crooner the hit single "As Tears Go By," was also making a comeback. She had dropped out of sight in the late '60s and early '70s to battle a drug problem but reemerged in 1979 with her album Broken English.
Since then, she had garnered a faithful musical following with a string of pop albums and made her acting debut in the Robert Wilson play The Black Rider, which ran last summer in London and San Francisco.
Faithfull's rep says the concert dates will be rescheduled for 2005.
