"Sixth Sense" Sets "Titanic" Record

The Sixth Sense scored another Titanic-style record this weekend.

The psychological thriller joined the epic shipwreck drama as the only movies to gross more than $20 million five weekends in a row.

The Sixth Sense's estimated $28.5 million for the four-day, Friday-Monday period was the highest gross ever for a Labor Day weekend, far ahead of the standard set by 1993's The Fugitive ($17.2 million).

Sense labored so much over Labor Day that it upped its Friday-Sunday take by 15 percent over the previous weekend and made more money than its three closest competitors combined: Runaway Bride ($8.6 million), The 13th Warrior ($8.4 million) and Bowfinger ($7 million).

With an expected overall domestic haul of $250 million (its total stands at about $175.5 million), Sense is set to become Disney's most successful-ever movie behind The Lion King ($312.8 million). Additionally, the Bruce Willis chiller appears destined to end 1999 as the the year's second biggest movie after The Phantom Menace ($420 million--estimated).

Audiences, meanwhile, expressed little interest in the weekend's two new releases: Chill Factor and Outside Providence.

The buddy-action flick Chill Factor, with would-be buddies Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Skeet Ulrich, was ice cold, earning just $5.7 million for a sixth-place finish.

Outside Providence, a sweet coming-of-age tale hyped as a "trademark Farrelly Brothers comedy", fared even worse, failing to crack the Top 10 with $3.2 million.

Overall, the Labor Day weekend haul was an Industry-pleasing $85.5 million, way up over last year's $69.3 million--just another notch for this summer's record-breaking season.

Here's a complete look at the Top 10 for the long weekend (Friday-Monday), according to box-office tracker Exhibitor Relations:

1. The Sixth Sense, $28.5 million
2. Runaway Bride, $8.6 million
3. The 13th Warrior, $8.4 million
4. Bowfinger, $7 million

6. Chill Factor, $5.7 million
7. Mickey Blue Eyes, $5.2 million
8. The Blair Witch Project, $3.8 million
9. The Muse, $3.5 million
10. The Astronaut's Wife $3.4 million
