"Sith" Faithful Hold the Line
If you line up, Yoda will come.
That's the mantra of anxious Star Wars fanatics in Los Angeles already parked in front of famed movie house Grauman's Chinese on Hollywood Boulevard.
Now, there is a question as to whether or not Star Wars: Episode III--Revenge of the Sith will even play the theater when it opens May 19, leaving the Star Wars faithful in the potentially embarrassing predicament of lining up for weeks in front of the wrong screen (the film is confirmed to open a few blocks away at the Arclight Theater on Sunset Boulevard).
Some SoCal Star Wars fans are already on the defensive over the Chinese vs. Arclight theater flap.
On Websites such as liningup.net and Metroblogging's blogging.la, several superfans voiced their stubborn refusal to move the line.
"We are choosing to line up at the best theatre in the world where the first Star Wars film premiered and where the final Star Wars film should premiere," said one female fanatic on blogging.la.
"We enjoy the crazy experience of lining up and would not trade that for overpriced reserved tickets at the Arclight. Those who are happy the film is at the Arclight--awesome for you. We are not seeing the film there and we're still going to keep lining up at the Chinese--it's simply too much fun," the die-hard huffed.
Fans also note that they have raised money for charity while they wait in line.
"Whether or not the movie is at the Chinese is honestly irrelevant," mused another fan in defense of the so-called "Star Wars Geeks" camped out at Mann's on blogging.la. "The more important point is that we're doing a good thing for some sick kids and having a good time while we're doing it."
Some of the faithful in line note that an Arclight premiere will allow people to buy tickets online, thus potentially rendering the line-up (which has been in effect since April 2 with over 100 fans participating in the line) useless.
"I fear the best tickets will go to the lucky few surfers [who] can get through and those of us lining up will end up with the table scraps," said one poster on liningup.net.
Still, the good-hearted Star Wars faithful are optimistic they can swing, at the very least, a charity screening of the highly anticipated final installment of the sci-fi saga.
"We've raised tens of thousands of dollars in the past for seriously ill children, and have already raised $6000+ this year for them," said a poster on blogging.la, referring to money raised for the Starlight Starbright Children's Foundation.
According to fans, similar scenarios played out in 1999 and 2002 at Mann's Chinese, with the film not officially booked at the theatre but ultimately playing there for the hundreds of fans who stayed in line for weeks prior to the openings of The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones, respectively.
Still, the Sith seekers are realistic about possibly moving the line--despite the days they have already invested getting "comfortable" at the intersection of Hollywood and Highland in Los Angeles.
"We're going to hang out and see how things develop--if it really looks like it won't be at the Chinese, then certainly we'll move," said a poster Tuesday.
As Yoda might say, "Always in motion is the future."
