The Lyons Den
Starring E! movie dude Ben Lyons
Sister Hannah's Canine Cinema Corner
The Lyons Den gives me the chance to speak what's on my mind and let it all hang in a more informal setting than my Daily 10 or E! News gigs. So today, I thought I'd really welcome you into my world by having a special guest columnist: my sister, Hannah Lyons.
Not only is she the queen of the Lower East Side, she's an animal rights activist, vegan and all-around great girl. She has dedicated her life to critters and wanted to swing by the Lyons Den and drop a little science on Firehouse Dog and Year of the Dog, new flicks on the horizon that both feature four-legged characters—of different breeds, it seems.
Take it away, sister!
HANNAH SPEAKS:
There are two kinds of people in the world: those who love dogs, and those who don't. Ben and I are on opposite sides of this spectrum, but no matter how you feel about them, you have to admit that dogs add a certain something to a story. Some of my favorite movies include dogs, everything from The Wizard of Oz to Snatch. So, as a movie and dog lover, I'm keeping an eye on two upcoming films: Firehouse Dog is a CGI-laden kids flick about an A-list movie star named Rexxx, who just so happens to be a dog. Rexxx gets lost and befriends a young boy who, not surprisingly, is friendless and motherless. The boy's firefighter dad is reluctant to keep the dog, until Rexxx begins using his action-hero skills to help the firefighters. I can't say I'm particularly excited to see this movie, and even though it's for kids the action sequences seem kind of scary. As a dog lover, I don't really have a desire to see one run in to burning buildings or jump over moving cars.Year of the Dog is from writer-producer-director-actor (and fellow vegan) Mike White, and it's also produced by Jack Black and Brad Pitt. Molly Shannon plays a woman devastated by the death of her dog, but her friends (an ensemble cast of quirky characters, like John C. Reilly and Laura Dern) think this might be her chance to finally find a husband. Peter Sarsgaard plays the nerdy guy at the vet clinic who calls her about a dog needing a home, and both dog and man might be what she's looking for. The movie has a weird mix of humor and sadness that reminds me of Little Miss Sunshine, and hopefully this will be a hit, too.
Well, until the next batch of dog flicks, I'm out. Enjoy the movies and adopt a stray!
