Sir Elton Hits a Sour Note on Imus

Sir Elton John is the latest celeb to blast embattled radio talk-show host Don Imus.

"He should step down immediately," the Rocket Man said last night during his performance at the Women's Sports Foundation's Billie Awards in Beverly Hills. "That's what I want to say."

As you surely have heard by now, Imus is under fire for making racial slurs on his radio show last week about the Rutgers women's basketball team.

John ended his performance with "Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word," which he dedicated to the team. He said they have "more dignity than [Imus] will in three lifetimes."

The Billies are named after tennis legend Billie Jean King and recognize outstanding media achievement in women's sports.

Sharon Stone had her own story to tell. "I made the men's golf team in high school," Stone recalled, "because there wasn't a women's golf team. I told the principal I was going to sue them if he wouldn't let me play."

Despite the night's uplifting atmosphere and overwhelming support expressed for the Rutgers team (many attendees wore scarlet ribbons as a sign of solidarity), Stone lost some points in my book last night. Why? She decided to go for some laughs by taking a cheap shot at Barry Manilow. If you haven't read my item about that yet, click here.
