Singer Admits Fault in "Incubust"
"Pardon Me," sir, but is that a switchblade in your carry-on?
Incubus lead singer Brandon Boyd pulled a major airport faux pas Wednesday by forgetting he had a switchblade in his carry-on bag prior to boarding a North Carolina-bound flight.
"I totally forgot it was at the bottom of my bag, and when the security person pulled it out, I thought, 'Oh, no,' " Boyd said in a statement released Thursday.
Oh no, indeed.
Boyd, 28, was charged with criminal possession of a weapon after TSA screeners at New York's LaGuardia Airport discovered the knife in his carry-on bag, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the airport.
The singer has taken responsibility for his actions and said the entire fiasco was "my bad."
Although the "Pardon Me" singer was eventually allowed on a later flight to Raleigh, according to Epic Records publicity chief Lois Najarian, Boyd still had one major problem--the delay meant that Incubus may have had to perform without their frontman as the flight put him into Raleigh just 20 minutes prior to Incubus' scheduled show at Raleigh's RVC Center.
Enter über-manager Steve Rennie.
Rennie arranged for a swank police escort for the Calabasas, California, alt-metal crooner, allowing him to bypass traffic and arrive at the stadium in true superstar style.
"That was the most rock star of an entrance I've ever made," Boyd said. "The police cars pulled up to the venue and I literally walked right onstage."
Boyd isn't the only singer setting off alarms at airport screening facilities lately. Enemy of the state (at least according to the TSA's no-fly list) Cat Stevens was deported last month in a highly publicized incident in which his London-to-D.C. flight was diverted to Bangor, Maine, where the singer known as Yusef Islam was yanked off and sent home.
Incubus, for their part, are currently in the middle of a fall tour through eastern and midwestern states. The multi-platinum-selling rockers play the Verizon Wireless Virginia Beach Amphitheater on Friday night.
