Simon's Sin City Search

And for his next trick, Simon Cowell will find yet another superstar.

The acerbic American Idol judge has teamed with NBC for a new reality competition, this time searching for a variety act to headline a showcase in Las Vegas.

"This is a show I've always wanted to make," Cowell said in a statement. "This time we're looking for everything. Personally, I hope to find the next Siegfried and Roy!"

The series, set to debut this summer, will feature singers, magicians, dancers, comedians and an array of novelty performances.

"I promise this is going to be a fun ride," Cowell said.

Following the familiar Idol format, contestants on the new show will perform in front of a panel of celebrity judges, who will determine which acts advance to the final rounds. Cowell will produce the series but will not be one of the on-air personalities.

"Simon has his finger on the pulse of pop culture," said Kevin Reilly, president of NBC Entertainment. "This show will be a shot of adrenaline to the variety format with Simon's gift of discovering untapped talent, both great and uniquely not so great."

Cowell also recently sold the series to the U.K.'s ITV under the title Got Talent, though it's unclear if that name will stick for the U.S. version.

The show is just one of four Cowell has a hand in this year. In addition to his Idol duties, the 36-year-old Brit is also producing two more reality competitions, Duets, set to premiere on Fox this summer, and American Inventor, tapped for ABC.

Duets will pair a professional singer with a celebrity not from the music industry to perform together in front of--surprise--a panel of judges, who will advance the couples to final rounds, at which point voting viewers will determine the winner.

American Inventor, announced last summer, acts as a search for the next great product concept to be voted on, as always, by a panel of judges and home viewers. However, that show has already stirred up controversy despite having yet to begin production. Last August, Cowell was sued by the creators of a similarly premised, and at the time, titled, show, Million Dollar Idea.

But before the airwaves turn all Cowell, all the time, he has his hands full with Idol, still the only show on which he'll have face time.

Last fall, Fox announced it was picking up the ratings juggernaut for five more seasons, and that Cowell would be on board for all of them. It was good news for Idol fans who feared Cowell would leave the show when his contract expired in January, especially because he was embroiled in a lawsuit with Idol mastermind Simon Fuller over a dueling British TV show. (As part of his contract extension, that lawsuit was settled.)

Cowell's path to world conquest continued this week when his hand-picked pop opera quartet Il Divo debuted at number one on the Billboard album charts with Ancora. The international group moved 156,000 copies last week, marking the first time since 2000 that an album napped the top spot without a radio single. Ancora, the follow-up to the group's top-five album Il Divo, topped the charts in 23 countries.
