"Sideways," "Sunshine" Write WGA Wins

It was like old times for Sideways at the 57th Annual Writers Guild Awards.

The wine-drenched comedy-drama, which began award season with a sweep of the critics' awards, earned its writers a Best Adapted Screenplay win Saturday. The scribes behind the mind- and time-bending Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind were honored with Best Original Screenplay.

The win for Sideways comes as the low-wattage, low-budget film is stalling heading into the Oscars. Once considered a possible for Best Picture, it now looks as if it peaked at January's Golden Globes, when it won two awards, including Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy.

Now, with Million Dollar Baby surging and The Aviator forever looming large, Sideways' screenplay, by director Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor, seems like its last, best hope for Academy Award glory.

The script, which also claimed the Golden Globe, beat back Before Sunset, Mean Girls, Million Dollar Baby and The Motorcycle Diaries for the WGA win. All but Mean Girls is an Oscar nominee in the Adapted Screenplay category.

Eternal Sunshine, by Charlie Kaufman, with a story by Kaufman, Michael Gondry and Pierre Bismuth, scored its WGA win over The Aviator, Garden State, Hotel Rwanda and Kinsey. All but Garden State and Kinsey will compete in the Original Screenplay race come the Academy Awards.

The WGAs, presented in bicoastal ceremonies in New York and Los Angeles, is the last major, mainstream award show before the Oscars, scheduled for next Sunday in Hollywood.

The guild also honors TV. NBC's The West Wing took top honors at the awards for episodic drama; Fox's ratings-challenged duo of Arrested Development and Malcolm in the Middle shared the win for episodic comedy.

David Mamet and John Sayles were among the night's honorary award recipients.

Earlier, in a special ceremony in Hollywood on Tuesday, Super Size Me, Morgan Spurlock's journey through the menu at McDonald's, was honored with the guild's inaugural writing award for documentary features.
