Shriver's Future at NBC Unclear

Maria Shriver's personal and professional worlds appear to be colliding.

The California first lady is scheduled for a sitdown with NBC's news prez Neal Shapiro to discuss taking an extended leave from her job as a Dateline NBC contributing anchor.

The Peacock bigwig will meet with Shriver in California next week to discuss concerns over her objectivity--or lack thereof--when it concerns her hubby Arnold Schwarzenegger's administration.

"Maria and I have had a number of discussions about her future with NBC News, including the possibility of extending her leave--but nothing has been decided," said Shapiro in a statement. "Together we will decide how to move forward when we meet in California next week."

Shriver was originally asked to resign, according to an item in the New York Daily News, because of the network's discomfort at Shriver's behind-the-scenes role in her husband's administration. News execs were reportedly freaked by stories that Shriver was instrumental in lobbying to get Schwarzenegger's budget plan passed by California legislators.

A spokesperson for Dateline denied the report and confirmed Shriver still has a job there.

An Emmy-winning journalist, Shriver took an unpaid leave of absence from NBC in August 2003 when Ah-nuld announced his intention to run for governor of California. He was elected California's 38th governor on October 7, 2003, and Shriver returned to work after his inauguration in November. Three years--and a seven-figure salary--remain on her contract.
