The Shoe Fits Kelly Clarkson
Kelly Clarkson has just secured a toehold to extend her 15 minutes of fame.
The first American Idol champ has inked a deal with Candie's to hawk its line of funky footwear throughout the fall in a series of ads on the pages of fashion, entertainment and lifestyle magazines.
"I'm really excited to be a Candie's girl," Clarkson said in a statement. "Candie's ads are totally different from everybody else's. They're so random; you never know what they are going to do next. They like to shake things up, and do things differently, that's what's so cool about it."
According to the shoe company, the ads are a hip, trendy campaign centered around the real Kelly Clarkson. Photog Davis Factor (who shot the infamous 1997 Jenny McCarthy-on-the-toilet campaign for Candie's) snapped the pics; stylist Phillip Bloch worked his hair and makeup magic; and Clarkson sported more than $1 million in diamonds for this all-American ad. Real indeed.
"The idea of the Candie's creative was to show America a side of its idol that they've never seen, a kind of behind the scenes look at Kelly Clarkson," Factor said of the ads. "We had a lot of fun and the pictures look sexy and glamorous." (Images from the photo shoot are on the Candie's Website, www.candies.com.)
Clarkson is joining the ranks of several other pop sensations who have mugged for the shoe company, including Destiny's Child, Ashanti and another boob-tube reality star, Kelly Osbourne.
Clarkson's Candie's contract is yet another extension of the made-for-TV pop star's surprisingly long run.
Despite widespread predictions of a fast and furious demise in popularity after her Idol victory and again after the heinous From Justin to Kelly, Clarkson has continued to bask in the media spotlight.
Her debut album, Thankful, has gone platinum and the single "Miss Independent" continues to get heavy airplay on radio and MTV. Next up for the singer is a performance on the Teen Choice Awards August 6 on Fox.
It seems Clarkson isn't the only Idol who is taking her fame beyond the recording studio. Ruben Studdard, the most recent Idol victor has inspired the "Ruben the Velvet Teddy Bear" line of plush toys from Applause.
