Shiloh's Birth Deemed "Successful"
Three days ago, Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt made her eagerly anticipated entrance into the world. Now, the details of just how she made that entrance are coming to light.
Angelina Jolie's obstetrician, Dr. Jason Rothbart, who was flown over to Namibia from Los Angeles to deliver the baby, told People magazine that Shiloh was born via scheduled C-section due to breech presentation and that she weighed a healthy 7 pounds at the time of her birth.
"Brad was with Angelina in the operating room the entire time and cut the umbilical cord of his daughter," Rothbart told People. "The surgery and birth went flawlessly. The staff, nurses and doctors I worked with at the Cottage Medi-Clinic Hospital were amazing. It was a team effort."
The A-list parents also spoke up, expressing their gratitude to the hospital.
"We would like to deeply thank the staff of the Cottage Medi-Clinic Hospital for all their kindness and commitment in assuring the successful birth of our daughter," Jolie and Brad Pitt told People magazine.
As a thank-you gift to Namibia for the hospitality they enjoyed while awaiting their daughter's arrival, Jolie and Pitt made a $300,000 donation that will be used for improvements in the maternity wards of two state hospitals in Walvis Bay and Swakopmund.
They also donated an additional $15,000 for a school and community center in Swakopmund.
"We want to contribute to Namibia and the people who have been so gracious to us at this time," Shiloh's parents said in a statement released Monday by the Namibian government.
Deputy Environment and Tourism Minister Leon Jooste said the couple's gift would "contribute significantly" to the health of Namibian babies.
Jooste also stated that little Shiloh had the right to Namibian citizenship, should she wish to exercise it.
"Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt will, according to Namibian law, be allowed to obtain Namibian citizenship if the parents should choose to do so," Jooste said.
He added that Pitt, Jolie and family planned to stay on in Namibia for a while in order to give mother and newborn daughter time to recuperate.
On Tuesday, Jolie's brother, James Haven, waxed enthusiastic about the arrival of his new niece.
"Angelina and Brad have shown me that caring for children is the greatest gift in the world. They are such wonderful parents with Maddox and Zahara. And as they welcome Shiloh into their beautiful family, I wish them health, happiness and hope for the greatest of life," Haven said in a statement released by his agent.
The baby is the first biological child for Pitt and Jolie, who hooked up after working together on 2005's Mr. and Mrs. Smith (and after Pitt's marriage to Jennifer Aniston hit the skids).
Jolie adopted four-year-old Maddox from Cambodia in 2002 and one-year-old Zahara from Ethiopia last summer. Pitt is in the process of becoming the children's adoptive father and formally added his surname to theirs in January.
