Shatner Beamed to Hospital
Somebody page Dr. McCoy--Captain Kirk has been laid up in sick bay.
A bum back forced erstwhile Star Trekker William Shatner to visit a hospital Tuesday.
The 74-year-old TV icon had wrapped shooting for the day on his current show, ABC's Boston Legal, when he began experiencing pain in his lower back, said publicist Stacey Luchs.
Shatner was transported by ambulance from the show's set in the Los Angeles suburb of Manhattan Beach to the nearby Little Company of Mary Hospital in Torrance.
Luchs said Tuesday night that Shatner was taken to the facility "as a precautionary measure only." Shatner was examined but not admitted, however, and "is resting comfortably at home." The back pain turned out to be a kidney stone.
He is due back on set Wednesday, the publicist said.
Last month, Shatner scored an Emmy for his work as attorney Denny Crane on Boston Legal.
It was his second straight award; he won his first for playing the smarmy legal eagle as a guest role on The Practice.
Boston Legal has averaged 11.7 million viewers this season; ABC recently gave the series a 27-episode order.
As for Shatner, the Priceline.com pitchman showed off his, er, singing chops at the Emmys' American Idol-esque competition with a rendition of the Star Trek theme song. Aside from continuing work on Boston Legal, he is slated to be inducted into Broadcasting & Cable's Hall of Fame at a ceremony in New York on Monday.
