Sex and the City Bags a Dreamgirl

Forget Prada. In Jennifer Hudson's world, the devil wears Manolos.

Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson has joined the cast of the hotly anticipated Sex and the City: The Movie, signing on to play gofer for Sarah Jessica Parker's Carrie Bradshaw. Planet Gossip's Marc Malkin first reported the casting scoop.

"She's very excited," Hudson's rep told Malkin.

In the flick, whose plot details have been not just closely but maniacally guarded, Hudson will play Louise, assistant to the couture-clad sex columnist.

Whether the necessity of a PA indicates that Carrie is headed for bigger and better professional chores than just rehashing her and her friends' love lives—in other words, the series' entire premise—remains to be seen.

What is known is that the flick will be set four years after the Sex-tet of Parker, Cynthia Nixon, Kristin Davis and Kim Cattrall last graced the small screen, mirroring the amount of time elapsed since HBO's seminal comedy ended its six-year run in 2004.

Hudson is the first nonregular to be attached to the project. Aside from the show's fab foursome, Chris Noth is the only other confirmed castmember back for the movie, reprising his role as Mr. Big. Not even fellow fellas and, when last we left them, key romantic partners Evan Handler (Harry), David Eigenberg (Steve) or Jason Lewis (Smith) have been mentioned as anything more than fan-speculated additions to the ensemble.

It might not take long to figure out which supporting players are bound for the big screen. Filming is set to take place in Manhattan next week, all but guaranteeing a paparazzi free-for-all for clues as to characters and plot lines.

As for Hudson, the high-profile role marks only her second gig since taking home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for Dreamgirls earlier this year. She recently completed the ensemble drama Winged Creatures, alongside fellow accolade magnet Forest Whitaker, Kate Beckinsale, Dakota Fanning and Jackie Earle Haley. The film is due out next year.

No release date has been set for Sex and the City: The Movie.
