Seacrest's Rockin' New Year
Seacrest, in!
Dick Clark has given the go-ahead for Ryan Seacrest to serve as cohost of this year's edition of Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve on ABC.
The move is part of a long term deal for Seacrest to assume the role of executive producer and one day to take over as sole host of the holiday special.
The American Idol host will join the American Bandstand host in Times Square on Dec. 31 to ring in the new year. Clark, who suffered a stroke last December, missed out on the '05 festivities, which were pinch-hosted by Regis Philbin.
"It will be good to be back in New York again for New Year's and I'm elated that Ryan has agreed to join me in ushering in New Year?s on America's favorite holiday special," Clark said in a statement. "This also gives me the opportunity to welcome him to the position."
Clark, 75, has not granted any interviews or appeared on television since suffering his stroke last year and has spent the bulk of his time recuperating at his Malibu estate. His publicist said Monday that the legendary producer is doing well and is back to walking, talking and leading a fairly normal life.
For the World's Oldest Teenager, a return to normal life means returning to the spotlight.
"We're ecstatic that Dick will be back where he belongs," Steven McPherson, president of ABC Entertainment, said in a statement. "The addition of Ryan Seacrest?s tremendous energy and universal appeal make him perfect for this show that is truly an American tradition. We?re thrilled to have Ryan joining our New Year?s Rockin? Eve family and look forward to seeing him in Times Square for many years to come."
It's just the latest accomplishment for Seacrest, who, in addition to his Idol duties, also hosts Los Angeles' top-rated morning radio show on KIIS-FM and counts down the American Top 40 on weekends.
"I am very grateful to be part of this institution," Seacrest said in a statement. "Dick Clark is an American icon. I am honored that he has entrusted me with such a role in this national tradition."
