Seacrest Special...Out!
Ryan Seacrest is ubiquitous, but mortal.
The rarely-off-the-air star's latest gig, a TV version of his American Top 40 radio countdown show, didn't sing.
American Top 40 Live, with Seacrest introducing the likes of Avril Lavigne and Maroon 5, ranked a lowly 93rd (3.8 million viewers) for the TV week ended Sunday, per Nielsen Media Research.
The two-hour Fox special was killed in the 8 p.m. hour by ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (10th place, 17.1 million) and in the 9 p.m. hour by ABC's Desperate Housewives special, Sorting out the Dirty Laundry (third place, 23.9 million).
The Desperate clip job, in turn, combined with Grey's Anatomy (seventh place, 17.9 million) to prevent the disaster-minded CBS Sunday Movie, Locusts (17th place, 12.7 million), from becoming a widespread threat to civilization.
Nothing could stop Seacrest, meanwhile, from being beamed into several million TV homes, rendering American Top 40 Live, much like American Juniors before it, a mere hiccup in his plan for total media domination.
The Seacrest-hosted American Idol franchise combined to deliver more viewers last week than any other series. Tuesday's dance feverish Idol was the week's number two show (24.1 million); Wednesday's results episode took fourth (22.7 million).
Elsewhere:
Further proof of Seacrest's mortality: CBS' CSI was actually the week's single most-watched show (first place, 27 million).CBS' steady Two and a Half Men (ninth place, 17.1 million) overshadowed the first new episode of CBS' Everybody Loves Raymond in two long months (11th place, 17 million).
Miracles never cease: NBC's Revelations (20th place, 11.8 million) held its own against Wednesday's Idol.
NBC's Will & Grace (45th place, 8 million) didn't exactly make a case for an eighth season, but its struggling network has to renew something.
Pam Anderson's considerable assets propped up Fox's Stacked (57th place, 7.5 million) in its second week.
Nicole Richie may be on the outs with Paris Hilton, but then again so are viewers of Fox's Simple Life (65th place, 6.4 million).
Overall, CBS dominated the network race, scoring wins in total viewers (averaging 12.5 million) and the 18-49 demo.
Idol-powered or no, Fox ran second in both races, averaging 9.2 million. Three top 10 hits or no, ABC couldn't manage more than a pair of third-place finishes, with 8.7 million viewers.
With no top 10 hits, NBC was fortunate to tie for third in the 18-49 category, and make it close in viewers, with 8.4 million.
The first One Tree Hill (91st place, 4.1 million) of costars Chad Michael Murray and Sophia Bush's married life helped lead the WB past UPN, 3.3 million to 3.2 million.
Here's a rundown of the 10 most watched prime-time shows for the week ended Sunday, according to Nielsen Media Research:
