"Scrubs'" McGinley Preps for Marriage

This one calls for 10cc's of celebration.

John C. McGinley, who has never called Zach Braff by the same girl's name twice on Scrubs, asked his girlfriend over the weekend if she would like to make it official, People magazine reports.

The 47-year-old actor has been dating yoga teacher Nicole Kressler, 34, for two and a half years, ever since McGinley's son, Max, went up to Kessler on the beach and his dad ended up getting struck by the thunderbolt.

"My son walked up to Nicole on the beach and I was throwing the ball for the dogs in the ocean," McGinley told People while strolling the red carpet at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards Saturday. "And Max went over to this hot blonde behind me and I was just aghast. I was like, 'Max, you get the dogs. I'll talk to the hot blonde.' And so we switched."

Nine-year-old Max is McGinley's son with ex-wife Lauren Lambert. They divorced in 1998 after two years of marriage.

McGinley and Kessler live together in Malibu, which is where he popped the question.

"At about 9:30 [Saturday] morning I asked Nicole to come down to the lower part of the garden with me in Malibu," said McGinley, whose Scrubs character, Dr. Perry Cox, was once described onscreen as "like House without the limp." "I wanted to show her some different flower ideas I had. And I had the rock in my pocket. I told her, 'Sit down here to see the view of the ocean,' and I said, 'Will you marry me?' and I took out the rock."

And what a rock. The veteran character actor bought his bride-to-be a two-carat round diamond ring, with the center stone graced by two one-carat diamonds and a couple of smaller baguettes, all designed by Los Angeles-area designer Mervin Haan, People reported.

"I wanted it to be a big rock in the middle, which is Nicole because she is the rock in this relationship," McGinley said. "And then on either side of that diamond, I put a carat, and that represents me and my son, Max," and the other diamonds represent future additions to their family.

How could Kessler have done anything but say yes? Oh, and cry, of course.

"I think I was speechless for about five minutes after John told me what the diamonds meant," Kessler told People. "I was just in tears and just beside myself. I'm still beside myself."

Though Scrubs has been put on hold until midseason to accommodate NBC's crowded fall schedule, McGinley plays a wacky contractor in the upcoming comedy Are We Done Yet? with Ice Cube and Nia Long.

While playing Dr. Cox turned McGinley into more of a household name, the actor has been on both the big and small screen practically nonstop since the '80s. One of his first film roles was playing a sergeant in Oliver Stone's Platoon and he went on to appear in a handful of the controversial director's films, ranging from Wall Street to Any Given Sunday.

McGinley also appeared in Office Space as an uptight micromanager and was one of the doomed motel guests stranded during a storm in Identity.
