Scorsese's Rolling Stones Flick Gathers Moss
Time is not on Martin Scorsese's side—at least when it comes to the release of his hyped Rolling Stones concert documentary.
The film, dubbed Shine a Light after an old Stones gospel tune, had been set for a Sept. 21 big-screen release. But on Friday, its distributor, Paramount Classics, confirmed the doc wouldn't unspool until April 2008.
The Viacom-owned studio says it needs more time to promote Shine a Light, and the band is busy through the end of August with its European tour, further holding up things.
Scorsese, who has yet to comment on the delay, shot the documentary last fall in New York City at the famed Beacon Theater. The band—Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ron Wood—performed with a slew of guests, including Buddy Guy, Jack White and Christina Aguilera.
An inveterate Stones fan who frequently scores his films with the band's tunes, Scorsese was in Rome last month to screen a rough cut of the movie for the rockers.
They were said to have loved the film but indicated they wanted more time to promote it. In the meantime, they're keeping with the European tour, which wraps Aug. 26. In July, the group released The Bigger Bang, a four-disc DVD chronicling the Stones' 2006 tour.
Scorsese, meanwhile, is gearing up to helm three films, according to IMDb: Frankie Machine, a thriller starring Robert De Niro, which is in preproduction; Silence, about a Jesuit priest in 17th-century Japan; and The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt, with Leonardo DiCaprio in the titular role.
