Saw vs. Private Ryan vs. Gwyneth's Head

Saw IV Lionsgate

The junket for Saw IV in Santa Monica was surprisingly traumatic, with victims including journalizers, the producers of Hostel, Gwyneth Paltrow and Steven Spielberg. But this being the fourth installment in a series about a killer (Tobin Bell) who tortures his victims, maybe it's not so surprising.

Part 1: Tobin Bell Is Talking to Us from Malibu:  Jigsaw himself is waiting for an evacuation order, and here we are yapping about a movie that none of us have seen, as Lionsgate wants everyone, including critics, to be surprised. Tobin is friendly and passionate in his conviction that this is a character-driven story, even when we journalizers are all, "Um, people come for the blood." But it's like, dude, please evacuate. You're great in the Saw franchise. But please get off the phone, pack your stuff and be safe.

Part 2: Being a Man on Gilmore Girls Is Maybe Not So Fun:  I can't look at Saw IV "hero" Scott Patterson (aka Luke the hunk from Gilmore Girls) without seeing Stars Hollow all around him. So, I have to say something.

Me:  This is so not Gilmore Girls.
Patterson:  Oh, no. This is the sequel I've dreamed of many times.
Me:  Oh, poor Miss Patty!

Then he goes off on how Sally Struthers is "without question one of the most talented actresses alive." It's sweet. And she is great.

Part 3: The Producers Love Halloween:  Saw producer Mark Burg goes off on genre competition and the lousy summer box-office take of Eli Roth's Hostel: Part II: "If they spent more time worrying about the movie and less time worrying about the marketing...," he said, before going on about his favorite holiday. "When Bob Weinstein opened his movie on Labor Day Weekend called Halloween, that was the biggest compliment anyone's ever given me, in regards to the Saw franchise. They had respect."

Part 4: How Did We Get to Gwyneth Paltrow, Again?  Take it away, producer Oren Koules:

"What was Seven? Gwyneth Paltrow's head is in a box at the end of the movie. That has more brutal stuff than we've ever done...But because David Fincher did it, Brad Pitt was in it and Gwyneth Paltrow got her head chopped off, it's a thriller."

Part 5: How Did We Get to Steven Spielberg, Again?  Koules spars with one anti-Saw journalizer. The subject is Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan, bloodbath violence and the MPAA. Yum!

Journalizer:  People have to see it [Ryan] to understand why war shouldn't be fought.
Koules:  If Spielberg hadn't have made that film, trust me, it would have been cut differently.
J:  I don't agree.
K:  By the way, how many times have you been in front of the MPAA?
J:  I haven't.
K:  There are three housewives from Reseda giving their opinion of what's going on in the world. I had to sit in the room counting blows to the head.

Hey Oren, sounds fun. Next time, I'm so there.
