Saving Brad Pitt
Police had to usher Brad Pitt into the safety of a movie theater Wednesday night, after thousands of screaming fans mobbed the newlywed and threatened to stampede the red carpet at the London premiere of his new film, Snatch.
The bobbies say they saw some fans pinned against metal barriers as the Jennifer Aniston-less Pitt worked the crowd of 4,000 in Leceister Square, signing autographs and posing for the paparazzi. The police say they feared for both the fans and the actor.
"There were thousands of people there. For safety's sake it was best to move him on and get him inside," a police spokesman told Reuters.
"There were kids getting crushed at the front," another officer told the Associated Press. "I told Mr. Pitt that 'you owe it to them not to put them in danger.' "
Although the police wouldn't confirm reports that they had threatened to arrest Pitt if he didn't move inside the Odeon theater, it could be said the mostly female crowd wouldn't have allowed Pitt to be handcuffed.
At least not by the police.
Pitt arrived in a chauffeur-driven car with Snatch's writer-director and Madonna flame, Guy Ritchie. Both men were without their significant others, who were both back in Los Angeles. Pitt left Aniston so she could continue working on the new season of Friends. Ritchie left behind Madonna to take care of their newborn son, Rocco.
A police rep told the BBC there was a big surge when the huge crowd spotted Pitt. "Our people spoke to one of the stars to ease the problem which had occurred," the officer explained. "Our policy for the event was public safety, as it always is on occasions like this.
In Snatch, Pitt plays an Irish boxer. The film--a sequel to Ritchie's Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels--focuses on a group of small-time London East End villains who get involved in a diamond heist that (surprise!) goes wrong.
Before ducking into the theater, Pitt said he took the low-paying role "just because I liked the story."
