SAG Noms Full of Felicity
Felicity Huffman doesn't rate as many headlines as her Desperate Housewives costars. She just gets more kudos.
Huffman earned Screen Actors Guild nominations Thursday for her Wisteria Lane residency and her big-screen turn as a man about to complete the journey to becoming a woman in Transamerica. Her overall three nods were more than any other star.
Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal and Michelle Williams, meanwhile, helped Oscar frontrunner Brokeback Mountain pick up more SAG nominations--four--than any other film.
Several actors received two nominations each, including Chris Bridges, who used his rap handle, Ludacris, in Hustle & Flow, and didn't in Crash. Bridges/Ludacris was nominated along with his costars from the two films in the cast category.
Terrence Howard, who rose above his work-a-day career with star turns in both Hustle & Flow and Crash, did not have his ascension confirmed by SAG voters. He was shut out of the individual acting categories, although, like Bridges, he received two nominations as an ensemble player.
Huffman's big day comes in the midst of what for her is a big awards-show season. In September, she won an Emmy for Housewives. In December, she was named Best Actress by the National Board of Review for Transamerica. And on Jan. 16, she'll be up for two Golden Globes, one for her hit TV series and one for her low-budget indie.
At the SAG Awards, Huffman will go up against Judi Dench (Mrs. Henderson Presents), Charlize Theron (North Country), Reese Witherspoon (Walk the Line) and Zhang Ziyi (Memoirs of a Geisha) in the lead film actress race.

The 2006 SAG Awards:
E!'s ultimate countdown coverage, Jan. 29, 5-8 p.m.
In the TV comedy actress category, Huffman will not go up against any of her Desperate Housewives costars. Instead, she'll vie for the honor against Candice Bergen (Boston Legal, apparently now classified as a lawyerly laff-riot), Patricia Heaton (Everybody Loves Raymond), Megan Mullally (Will & Grace) and Mary-Louise Parker (Weeds).
Possibly in the name of preserving peace in the suburbs, Teri Hatcher, Marcia Cross, Eva Longoria and Nicollette Sheridan, snubbed in the individual categories, were nominated alongside Huffman in the Comedy Series Ensemble field. The Housewives husbands also got in on the ensemble nomination. Page Kennedy, the banished Housewives neighbor, did not.
As an Oscar barometer, the SAG Awards isn't a bad one. Last year, it went four-for-four in the top acting categories in that its winners (Jamie Foxx, Hilary Swank, Cate Blanchett and Morgan Freeman) went on to duplicate their success at the Academy Awards.
In SAG's equivalent of the Best Actor race, Brokeback's Ledger is pitted against Russell Crowe (Cinderella Man), Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote), Joaquin Phoenix (Walk the Line) and David Strathairn (Good Night, and Good Luck). Ledger is the only actor of the group to portray a character who wasn't ripped from the history books.
In the ostensible Best Supporting Actor category, it's Gyllenhaal versus Don Cheadle (Crash), George Clooney (Syriana), Matt Dillon (Crash) and Paul Giamatti (Cinderella Man).
Among the supporting actress hopefuls, Williams will put her Brokeback Mountain work up against that of Amy Adams (Junebug), Catherine Keener (Capote), Frances McDormand (North Country) and Rachel Weisz (The Constant Gardener).
Williams and Ledger were among the real-life couples to net SAG nominations. The others: Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, both nominees for the HBO miniseries Empire Falls; and Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe, the latter nominated as a member of the Crash ensemble.
In the TV categories, Empire Falls and Boston Legal led the way with four nominations each. Grey's Anatomy stars Patrick Dempsey and Sandra Oh broke through with individual acting nominations. And John Spencer, who died Dec. 16, was a posthumous nominee as a member of The West Wing ensemble.
The awards are due to be presented Jan. 29 in Los Angeles. Shirley Temple Black, who as Shirley Temple was the biggest and youngest movie star of the 1930s, has been tapped to receive the union's lifetime achievement tribute.
