Ryder Rung Up On Shoplifting Charges
The 30-year-old actress was charged Friday with four felony counts stemming from her supposed illicit shopping spree at the Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills in which she allegedly absconded with nearly $4,800 in clothing and accessories and was found carrying painkillers without a prescription.
The Girl, Interrupted and Reality Bites star was rung up on one count each of grand theft, commercial burglary, vandalism and possession of a controlled substance, according to the Los Angeles District Attorney. The charges carry a maximum penalty of three years, eight months.
Prosecutors are also seeking to have the actress' bail be increased from $20,000 to $30,000.
Ryder remains free and is due in a Beverly Hills courtroom February 8 for arraignment.
"We are shocked at what appear to be grossly exaggerated charges. We look forward to the opportunity to explain and resolve these allegations," Ryder's publicist said in a statement Friday. Previously, her attorney, Mark Geragos, has maintained that the actress had receipts for the items she was accused of purloining.
Authorities, however, beg to differ.
The two-time Oscar nominee was arrested December 12 at the Saks on Wilshire Boulevard after clerks allegedly spotted her stuffing clothing and accessories into a bag after ripping off the price tags. According to police, Saks security guards also saw Ryder using scissors to try and remove a sensor tag from a $1,000 Judith Leiber handbag.
(E! Online columnist Ted Casablanca reports that sources close to Ryder say the actress merely went outside the store to smoke a cigarette and planned to resume shopping after getting her nicotine fix.)
When they searched her purse, Beverly Hills police allegedly found a bottle of the narcotic pain reliever Oxycodone--but Ryder couldn't provide a prescription for the pills.
Geragos has said the actress does have a prescription but would not elaborate on why she needs the medication.
The pixie-ish star--whose film résumé includes Oscar-nominated roles in The Age of Innocence and Little Women, in addition to parts in Heathers, Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands and Alien Resurrection--does have a history of health issues.
Last August, Ryder bailed out of her lead role in the indie film Lily and the Secret Planting after she was hospitalized for what her publicist described as a "gastroenterological disorder." And while promoting her role in 1999's Girl, Interrupted, Ryder revealed that she had checked herself into a mental hospital in 1990 for anxiety attacks, forcing her to drop out of The Godfather, Part III.
