Rule to Toronto: Sorry

Ja Rule offered up a big mea culpa Monday after pleading guilty to assaulting a clubgoer in a Toronto nightspot last summer.

"I just want to say I apologize to the city of Toronto, I am just sorry for my actions," said the 29-year-old rapper, who was flanked by his lawyer and bodyguards outside the courthouse.

His "actions" included doling out a black eye to a patron at La Rouge Nightclub on June 5, after being taunted by a group of 50 Cent fans.

Earlier in court, Justice W.P. Bassel, did his part by apologizing to Rule, calling the thugs who instigated the violence at La Rouge an "embarrassment" to Canada's largest city.

Rule copped to an assault charge and paid a $1,200 fine. In turn, prosecutors dropped the more serious count of assault causing bodily harm, which carried a possible jail sentence.

"Hopefully this was a one-time outburst," Bassel told the hip-hopster, adding, "You'll pay a price for this--by the publicity that will flow out of this." (Apparently the judge hasn't been following the Martha Stewart case.)

Prosecutors agreed to the lesser charge in part because Rule was provoked by a passel of 50 Cent fans, who Rule alleged shouted "derogatory" comments about his public feud with Fiddy.

Rule, who resides in New Jersey, was in Canada filming Assault on Precinct 13.

His most recent album, R.U.L.E. failed to have the same impact as his previous discs.

However, the Grammy-nominated Rule is hoping 2005 will restore him to the front of the rap pack with a, pardon the pun, one-two punch. He recently told MTV he plans to address 50 Cent's dissing (and also, presumably, offer up a few nice rhymes unrelated to the feud) in two full-length CDs slated for release this year within months of each other.

After his stop in Toronto, the rapper-actor will resume a bit of globetrotting as one of the headliners of the Roc tha Block tour. He recently played dates in Australia and heads off to Germany later this month.
