"Rudolph the Red" Knows Ratings

Rudolph schooled Frosty. Nick and Jessica, too.

CBS' 40-year-old animated special Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (15th place, 14.9 million viewers) was the most watched Yuletide yarn of the TV week ended Sunday, according to Nielsen Media Research.

The 35-year-old Frosty the Snowman looked a bit mushy this time out, drawing 10 million (39th place) for CBS. Adding insult to greenhouse injury, the cartoon was outdone by its 1992 sequel, Frosty Returns (30th place, 10.6 million), also aired on CBS.

Non-animated humans Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson fared well with two stocking stuffers: ABC's Nick & Jessica's Family Christmas (22nd place, 12.4 million) and NBC's Christmas at Rockefeller Center (29th place, 10.9 million).

Though technically not a holiday special, the ABC TV movie Mitch Albom's The Five People You Meet in Heaven (fifth place, 18.6 million), did feature a painted-blue Jeff Daniels, undoubtedly bringing joy to viewers of all ages.

Elsewhere:

On NBC's The Apprentice 2, 16.7 million (11th place) watched Donald Trump go all Scrooge on Ivana for not selling enough M&Ms or getting naked or something.
With 15.4 million viewers, Tom Brokaw's final NBC Nightly News broadcast netted a bigger audience than all but 13 of the week's prime-time shows. To put this in perspective, Brokaw was more popular than even Rudolph.
An estimated 24 million watched Jeopardy! king Ken Jennings dethroned by California Realtor Nancy Zerg, per TVGameShows.Net.
TBS' unscripted The Real Gilligan's Island got off to fast start by cable TV standards, averaging 3.9 million for its first two episodes.
The cultural event that was Monday night's cast reunion of The Nanny, subtitled A Nosh to Remember, averaged 3.6 million for Lifetime--the cable network's second-biggest audience for a special behind the cultural event that was its 2003 Golden Girls reunion.
A very special sweeps wedding for Damon Wayans' TV son helped ABC's My Wife and Kids to a season-high 9.4 million viewers (45th place). The CBS figure-skating special Ice Wars 2004, which apparently had nothing to do at all with the Ukranian elections, engaged a not-so-hot 7.1 million (60th place).

Overall, CBS, led by a top-rated CSI repeat (24.7 million), won the week, averaging 13 million viewers.

ABC, which ended the November sweeps with second place all to itself in the 18-49 demo, took second place in viewers last week as well, with 10.4 million. NBC trailed with 10.37 million; Fox trailed further, with just 6.6 million.

UPN edged the WB, 3.6 million to 3.5 million.

Here's a rundown of the 10 most watched prime-time shows for the week ended Sunday, according to Nielsen Media Research:

1. CSI, CBS, 24.7 million viewers
2. CSI: Miami, CBS, 22.7 million viewers
3. Survivor: Vanuatu, CBS, 19.5 million viewers

7. Without a Trace, CBS, 17.7 million viewers
8. ER, NBC, 17.67 million viewers
9. Monday Night Football, ABC, 17.4 million viewers
10. Lost, ABC, 17.2 million viewers
