Ruben Rebounds in Time for Turkey
An on-the-mend Ruben Studdard was released from the hospital, where he was being treated for exhaustion, just in time to enjoy a Thanksgiving feast.
The Velvet Teddy Bear checked himself into a Birmingham, Alabama, hospital Nov. 22, after a bout of bronchitis left him under the weather, his publicist said.
He was forced to cancel a pair of gigs and to put promoting his new album, I Need an Angel, on the back burner while he took to his bed to recuperate.
Studdard remained hospitalized through Thanksgiving morning, but was then given the okay to spend the rest of the holiday at home with his family, his label, J Records, confirmed to E!
The crooner's uncle, Fred Williams, told Access Hollywood that his nephew was "thrilled" to be released in time for the holiday meal.
"He's glad to eat," Williams said.
Williams also said that Studdard "is looking forward to going back to work."
The portly performer, who reportedly tips the scales at 449 pounds, was recently set to slim down his figure in front of Extra's cameras, but found the low-cal, low-carb, medically-supervised regimen he was forced to endure too taxing to continue.
He scrapped the plan after losing 12 pounds and said he planned to try a home-delivery meal plan and working out with a trainer instead.
After Studdard triumphed in the second season of American Idol, he released his first album, Soulful, which sold over 1 million copies and garnered him a Grammy nomination.
His latest, and first full-length effort, I Need an Angel, features a return to the singer's gospel roots and features several songs he wrote himself, along with covers of Al Green's "How Do You Mend a Broken Heart" and the Billie Holiday hit "For All We Know."
