Rod and Rachel Make It Official
Rod Stewart and Rachel Hunter are on a downtown train to divorce.
Four years after their well publicized split, the New Zealand-born supermodel finally got around to filing divorce papers this week seeking to make her separation from her estranged rocker-hubby permanent.
The 34-year-old Hunter made her petition in Los Angeles Superior Court, citing the usual "irreconcilable differences" to end her 13-year-marriage to the 57-year-old Stewart. No word how the couple will divide up their assets, including a Beverly Hills mansion, but court papers indicated they will share custody of their two kids, daughter Renee, 11, and son Liam, 8.
News of the divorce doesn't exactly come as shocker. By this point, the twosome was together in name only, having parted company in 1998 and initiated new romances. Hunter briefly made headlines dating British popster Robbie Williams, while Stewart took up with blonde photographer Penny Lancaster.
Just weeks ago, the raspy-throated singer announced that a divorce was in the offing.
"I have decided to get a divorce," Stewart told Britain's Sun on May 23. "I've paid my dues to the institution of marriage and have no interest in clinging to the past. When I get back to L.A., it will all be finalized. It's time to close that chapter of my life, and I owe it to Penny."
This will be the second failed union for Mr. Vagabond Heart.
Stewart's five-year marriage to Alana Hamilton ended in 1979 after spawning two children. He also has a daughter with model Kelly Emberg.
The former Faces frontman, whose solo hits include "Maggie May," "Hot Legs," "Tonight's the Night" and "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy," scored a Grammy nod earlier this year for Best Traditional Pop Vocal for It Had to Be You...The Great American Songbook, which made it into the Top 10 on Billboard's album chart.
Rod the Mod's also the centerpiece of Tonight's the Night, a new musical by comedian and dramatist Ben Elton using 22 of the singer's biggest tunes to tell the story of a shy young man who tries to seduce the object of his affection by emulating--who else?--his idol Rod Stewart. The musical is set to debut this fall in London's West End and could eventually migrate to New York.
Hunter, whose days as a Sports Illustrated pinup are long behind her, recently appeared judging ABC's reality contest Are You Hot?
