Robert Downey Jr. Goes Pop
Robert Downey Jr. played The Singing Detective. Now, he's going to try his hand at The Singing Thespian.
The onetime Oscar nominee, as well known for his numerous drug-related arrests as his acting chops, will drop his solo album debut Nov. 23, his new label home, Sony Classical, announced Wednesday.
The 10-song collection will consist of eight Downey-penned pop ballads and two covers, "Smile," the Charlie Chaplin standard, and "Your Move," the Yes standard.
Downey, 39, previously warbled "Smile" for the soundtrack of Chaplin, the 1992 biopic for which he garnered his lone, to date, Oscar nomination.
In a statement, Sony Classical president Peter Gelb called Downey a "brilliantly, gifted songwriter" possessed of a "burnished, smoky voice."
Downey's piano playing will be heard on the as-yet untitled CD, as well. No adjectives were available to describe his ivory-tickling skills.
In addition to the Chaplin soundtrack, Downey's musical forays have been featured in the likes of Two Girls and a Guy, the 1997 film in which he starred, and TV's Ally McBeal.
Downey, who appeared for one season on the loopy lawyer series, contributed three tracks to the 2001 soundtrack release, Ally McBeal: For Once in My Life.
In a review, Amazon.com was unmoved by Downey's "burnished, smoky voice" calling it a "contrived rasp."
Downey's promotional efforts on behalf of the Ally McBeal album were cut short in April 2001 when he was busted on drug charges.
The Less Than Zero star's well-worn record of arrests and rehab has been clean since he completed a year-long, court-ordered detox stint in 2002.
Recent credits include the 2003 film The Singing Detective and Eros, a trilogy featuring segments from directors Steven Soderbergh, Michelangelo Antonioni and Wong Kar-wai, which debuted last week at the Venice Film Festival. (Downey stars in the Soderbergh contribution.)
With his forthcoming solo debut, Downey follows ex-wife Deborah Falconer to the record shelves.
Falconer, possessed of a "profound, organic voice," per her official bio, released her own pop album, Brave Like Me, last year.
Downey and Falconer, who wed in 1992, finalized their long-in-the-works split earlier this year.
