Richie Spins Off Deejay Fiance

Nicole Richie and Paris Hilton may no longer be best friends, but they still have much in common: A TV show, a literary career--and, as of Wednesday, a broken engagement.

Less than two months after Hilton scuttled her planned marriage to shipping heir Paris Latsis, her Simple Life costar has scuttled her planned marriage to deejay Adam Goldstein.

"They have decided to break off [the] engagement," Richie rep Cindy Guagenti said in a statement. "The decision is mutual."

Richie, 24, and Goldstein, 32, announced their marital intentions last February. It was to be the first walk down the aisle for both.

According to Us Weekly, which first reported the split Wednesday, the decision to go separate ways was made just a few days ago. As recently as Monday, Star magazine's Website had the couple moving into a three-bedroom, "trendy West Hollywood" condo with "plenty of room for them to grow into it as a family."

Richie and Goldstein went public as a couple in 2004. Theirs seemed a match made on the dance floor--she's the daughter of "Endless Love" crooner Lionel Richie; he's the in-demand turntable twister known as DJ AM.

As she sifts through their romantic rubble, Richie can content herself with the judicious decision not to allow Simple Life cameras to document the wedding run-up. The reality star ruled out that possibility months ago.

But as formats would have it, both Richie and Hilton will be asked to play traditional wives to presumably befuddled families in the upcoming new season of The Simple Life, to debut next spring on E! (E! Entertainment Television and E! Online are divisions of E! Networks.) The new cycle of episodes will be dubbed, "Till Death Do Us Part," a concept which neither star has yet attempted to master.

Multitasking, not marriage, seems to agree more with Richie and Hilton. Richie recently signed a sitcom deal, and published a novel; Hilton, 24, recently published her second book, a sidelight to her usual jet-setting, fragrance-line-fronting duties.

Though Richie and Hilton are both committed to continuing with The Simple Life, ending months of speculation that their run as reality TV's Lucy and Ethel were over, there has been no sign that their off-screen friendship has resumed since their rift became public.

If nothing else, perhaps the stylish ex-fiancees can go in on a joint pity party.
