Renfro Sentenced for Botched Boat Heist
A Florida judge on Thursday sentenced the former child star to two years' probation, in addition to repair costs and police fees, for his role in the attempted robbery of a 45-foot yacht last summer.
"I don't have any excuses or fast one-liners to pull out of my shoes," Renfro told Broward County Circuit Judge Ronald Rothschild during the sentencing hearing.
Renfro, 18, who made his name as the kid client in 1994's The Client, agreed to pay the yacht's owner $4,204.55 for loss of use of the vessel and repairs. He also has to pay the Fort Lauderdale Police Department $141.02 for investigative costs.
In the predawn hours of August 28, the actor and his 24-year-old buddy, Harold Bond, went to Fort Lauderdale's Holiday Harbor and hopped on board the yacht. According to police reports, the partners in crime forgot to untie the boat's dock lines, so when the boat pulled forward, the lines stretched and then yanked the $175,000 vessel back into the dock, damaging its stern and allowing the two would-be pirates to be caught.
They were held by nearby boaters--who were awakened when the actor fired up the yacht's engines--until the cops and the boat's owner arrived.
Renfro was charged with one count of third-degree grand theft and criminal mischief. The Broward state attorney's office also believed the actor was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time.
The actor, who has appeared in 12 films, including The Cure, Telling Lies in America and Sleepers with Brad Pitt, was in Fort Lauderdale to shoot his next project, Bully. Cameras were supposed to begin rolling Tuesday--the day after the arrest.
Renfro's rap sheet has drawn more attention than his screen credits in recent years. He was arrested in 1998 after police found two packets of cocaine and marijuana in his front pocket. Renfro agreed to random drug screening as part of a plea deal.
