Renfro: Rehab Working

This time, Brad Renfro says, he will stay clean.

"I'm tired of paying the consequences," the Apt Pupil star told reporters Tuesday outside a Los Angeles courtroom. The actor was on the docket for a progress report of his latest attempt at rehabilitation as part of his sentence stemming from a December bust in which he was arrested for attempted heroin possession.

The actor, 23, agreed to enroll in a drug-diversion program in March in order to avoid jail time. (The deal, unfortunately, did not prevent him from serving a 10-day sentence last month for separate drunken driving charges.)

He appeared in court Tuesday after completing a nine-day detox program, and claimed he had been clean for "about 30 days."

When asked by Superior Court Commissioner Melissa Widdfield how the experience went, the actor said, "Very well. Great. Thanks for asking. It wasn't as bad as I had feared it would be."

"It's helped me greatly," he said. "It's definitely been an eye-opener...I'm going to stay clean, and, in turn, it will help me spiritually and with work.

"It's going to help me in all phases of my life."

Next up for Renfro is a 24-hour live-in treatment center. While Renfro didn't give a timeline on how long he expected to stay in the facility, his lawyer, Richard Kaplan, said he could spend as much as six months in the program.

Whatever the length, it's surely better than the alternative. As part of his sentence, the former child star was also placed on three years' probation, and could face up to 18 months in prison should he screw up.

Based on his brief jail stint last month, Renfro says he has no plans on returning.

"A lot of the things they say are true," the actor told Court TV of his incarceration. "It's a madhouse."

As for any future acting plans, Renfro told the cable net that his career is on hold and staying sober is his only goal.

"It's better that way," he said. "I feel blessed that I'm going through this now, rather than later. I'm still a kid. I'm 23."

Renfro is due back in court May 2 for his next progress report.
