R.E.M., Phish, Wallflowers Play Bridge Concert

Two things that you can count on in October in the Bay Area: plenty of fog and Neil Young's Bridge School Benefit.

The annual concert, headlined by Young and benefiting the namesake school for children with severe speech and physical impairments has attracted an outstanding lineup year after year for acoustic sets at Shoreline Ampitheatre in Mountain View, California. Past performers include Simon and Garfunkel, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Beck and dozens of other marquee artists. This year marks the 12th anniversary of the show, which will hit the stage Saturday at 5 p.m. PT and Sunday at 2 p.m.

Young will be joined this year by R.E.M., Phish, Sarah McLachlan, the Wallflowers, Barenaked Ladies, Jonathan Richman and the Eels. In addition, the shows always feature surprise guests--speculation is already high that onetime Bridge performer Pete Droge might appear with members of two-time Bridge vets Pearl Jam in tow. Last year's mystery guest was Pete Townshend.

Bands frequently use their Bridge sets to debut material or vastly rework songs in the acoustic format. Young himself performed the bulk of his Sleeps With Angels disc for the only time at the 1995 Bridge show, and Springsteen debuted songs from The Ghost of Tom Joad that year as well.

This time around fans will surely have a sneak peak at R.E.M.'s forthcoming Up album. The show will mark the first major appearance of the band without retired drummer Bill Berry.

Fans might also get a clue about Phish's annual Halloween concert--when the rockers go to Las Vegas and perform an entire album by another band. In the last three years, Phish has recreated the Beatles' White Album, the Who's Quadrophenia and Talking Heads' Remain in Light for Halloween. Favorites for this year's show include the Rolling Stones' Exile on Main Street and Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon.

Surprisingly, tickets were still available for both days at presstime.
