Regis vs. "National Enquirer"
Apparently not Regis Philbin.
Upon hearing the tabloid was going to run a front-page story alleging he had a three-year affair with a former Los Angeles Rams cheerleader, Mr. Millionaire himself tried to get the "news" paper to stop the presses, according to the New York Post.
It was, of course, a no go.
As of Friday morning, when the tabloid hit the stands, enquiring minds nationwide found out about the supposed tryst between the 66-year-old host of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and a woman named Maria Majerek.
Based on excerpts from Majerek's diary, which she sold to the Enquirer, the article claims Philbin, who has been married to wife Joy for 30 years, was quite the stud on the side.
"Regis had me strip naked and put my fur coat on," one entry reads. "We made love. It was pure raw raging sex."
Majerek goes on to say Philbin was a "terrific lover--always gentle, thoughtful and considerate."
She also tells the Enquirer that Philbin often complained about his now departed cohost, Kathie Lee Gifford. Reeg purportedly confided to the cheerleader that he hated how Kathie Lee would talk about her kids. Majerek says Philbin told her: "She never shuts up about it...I don't know which is worse--that or her huge mop of hair."
And Majerek says the affair ended when Philbin stopped calling her. "He was getting in too deep. He had too much at stake, too much to lose."
Although Philbin's rep says he doesn't comment on "tabloid issues," the Post quotes unnamed sources at ABC saying Reeg "blew his top when he heard about the Enquirer story." The paper says he tried to convince the tab to kill the story, but the Enquirer refused.
Meanwhile, Majerek says she has no hard feelings about her alleged fling, and only remembers the best parts. "One thing's for sure," she says, "he sure made me feel like a million bucks!"
