Regis Still Ticking on Daytime

The revolving door of morning show hosts is in full swing: Rosie may be out, but Regis is back.

Regis Philbin returned to Live with Regis and Kelly Thursday morning, just six weeks after undergoing triple heart bypass surgery.

Philbin and reunited cohost Kelly Ripa began the show to chants of "Regis, Regis" from the  audience and said while it had been just "six weeks and one day" since he underwent the ticker procedure, it "felt like six months, six years."

"What an occasion this has been," Philbin said. "I lost eight pounds, but I aged 12 [years]. I wasn't prepared for it. I didn't know what a bypass really was until I went through it. It was a tough procedure, but the rewards are great."

As for the fuss over his return being slightly overshadowed by that other major morning show announcement this week, Philbin proved he was back in top form.

Holding up copies of the New York Post and New York Daily News, whose front covers featured Rosie O'Donnell, Philbin said "the papers are full of my picture. I wish they'd stop and leave me alone!"

The 75-year-old TV vet also described a bit of his medical ordeal, trotting out the Weill Cornell Medical Center team, led by Dr. O Wayne Isom, that performed his surgery on Mar. 14.

Of course, he was unable to refrain from commenting on the state of Live affairs since his temporary departure.

"I would watch you in the morning and I got to tell you something," he said to Ripa. "When you're not with me, you shine."

"I personally missed you," a choked-up Ripa replied. "I felt like for six weeks my light was dimmed."

After a collection of "aws" from the audience, Philbin retorted: "That's a line she used in All My Children in 1988."

Philbin wasn't the only VIP at the show, however. His inaugural homecoming guest was the usually interview-phobic David Letterman.

"Take a good look at him when he comes out, because chances are you will never see him anywhere again for the rest of your life," Philbin warned the audience of the hermetic late-night host.

Letterman's guest spot on the show was a payback for Philbin, who performed the same favor for Letterman several times, including when the Late Show host underwent his own heart surgery in 2000.

"Regis, don't be a hero, if you need to lie down, we can finish up here," Letterman said at the start of the chat.

He went on to compare leg artery scars with Philbin, who said he didn't realize where the bypass-required vein would come from.

"What, do you think they're gonna pick some up at the Home Depot?" Letterman asked, before telling Ripa, "You came this close to having your own show."

Of his own bypass, Letterman said, "It was the most exciting thing in my life ever. I'm a hypochondriac, and if you're a hypochondriac, this is right up your alley."

"My first bypass was the Tonight Show."

Joking aside, Letterman and Philbin agreed that the procedure was "hell." Still, the late-night host offered up some foolproof health advice for the still-recovering patient.

"Stay away from The View. They've got a short life. They're dropping like flies over there."
