Regis' Next Host: You?
More than 10,000 fans. That's how many people mailed in audition tapes in hopes of helping Regis Philbin greet America.
"It's just unbelievable," Josephine Pisano, 69, told the New York Daily News. "I didn't think anything of it. I didn't think I'd get looked at. I thought they'd be looking for young girls." The Bay Shore, New York, woman will cohost with Reeg on Wednesday's show.
Starting next Monday, "Real Person Week" will feature the five lucky winners. Funny thing is, the contest didn't become official until a huge number of audition tapes began piling up and begging for attention. Apparently, wannabe-Kathie Lees were just sending in tapes without prompting.
Executive producer Michael Gelman picked 10 finalists, with the winners being selected via a poll on the show's Website. More than 300,000 viewers voted, according to producers.
"I was totally shocked," Iowa's Stacey Valant told the News. "I literally put the video together in 15 minutes."
The former actress-turned-fitness trainer didn't tell any of her friends about submitting a tape until Wednesday, when she was selected as one of the finalists to sit next to Regis, who has been using guest cohosts (ranging from Survivor castaways, B-grade actors, various comics and even his wife) since Kathie Lee Gifford left the show in July.
"Nobody's going to fill Kathie Lee's shoes," Valant said. "She was her own entity. But it's good to get a whole fresh approach to the show...the cohost, as well."
Indeed many more viewers think so, as ratings for the show have increased 26 percent since Kathie Lee's exit.
"I'm hoping that maybe somebody sees me and thinks I sound okay," Arizona's Emily Brengle said. Brengle, whose tape included her singing to a woman wearing a Philbin mask, will warble for the nation on Friday. In addition to Brengle, Valent and Pisano, Shelly Conway, a fan from Ohio, and Californian Ronda Jamgotchian will be riding shotgun with Reeg.
Meanwhile, in other Regis news, representatives for both the show and Gifford are denying reports earlier this week that Live's ex-cohost was being banned from the show. It had been widely reported that Regis didn't want Gifford coming back on the show to plug her new CD.
Turns out the reason Kathie Lee isn't coming on the show anytime soon is because of timing issues.
"Regis didn't know she wanted to come on," a show spokesperson told the Daily News. "But there have been discussions about Kathie Lee appearing. Management decided this wouldn't be an appropriate time, given that we're still searching for a new cohost."
