Regis' New Kathie Lee?
According to publications as varied as the Hollywood Reporter, New York Post and the Website TVtalkshows.com, All My Children star Kelly Ripa is the leading contender to become the next Kathie Lee Gifford opposite Regis Philbin on the daytime gabfest. The only formality that remains, the reports say, is for Regis to actually make the announcement, which will supposedly happen Monday.
Trouble is, says Live spokeswoman Debbie Dolins, "Nobody can confirm anything."
The search for a permanent Regis sidekick has been going on since Gifford left the show last July after 15 years of morning yakking.
Regis has been trying out possible cohosts in the interim, even holding a contest in September in which viewers got a chance to sit in the hot seat. Several of the fill-ins have been mentioned as possible permanent replacements--including Philbin's wife, Joy, CNBC financial reporter Maria Bartiromo and E! personality Suzanne Sena--but producer Michael Gelman hasn't given any firm indication.
Ripa--whose résumé includes a 10-year, Daytime Emmy-nominated stint playing Hayley Santos on the ABC soap All My Children--has been one of the most popular fill-in foils for Philbin, even announcing that she was pregnant during a November appearance on the show.
While official sources are mum, there are, of course, several key clues that she is the pick.
According to TVtalkshows.com, Disney, the studio that produces the show, has purchased the domain name rights to "www.LivewithRegisandKelly.com." Webmaster Trevor Rieger tells the New York Post that he accidentally happened across the Regis and Kelly association while doing a routine search on the Net.
Another sign: Ripa's scheduled to ham it up with Reeg as a guest host on Monday--which would be really convenient if indeed Regis is, as reports say, going to announce her as his pick that day.
Of course, the Live folks might not be too keen on naming a new cohost too soon. The rotating gang of sidekicks has helped the morning show increase its ratings by more than 25 percent since Kathie Lee's exit.
