Regis Disses Syndicated "Millionaire"

Regis has given his final answer on the syndicated version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire--and now Buena Vista Television is in the hot seat to find a host.

With the studio set to shop its syndicated version of the game show to potential buyers next week in Las Vegas, they'll be doing it without the hosting expertise of Regis Philbin.

"Regis has been offered the syndicated Millionaire not once, but twice, and has declined," Philbin's agent, Jim Griffin, tells the New York Post.

Griffin wouldn't say why Philbin decided to pass on the daytime version of his ABC quizzer. "I won't go into specifics of the offer and why it didn't compel him," he said. "Regis already has a full plate and it's not like he needed another job. I'm sure he will be supportive of whoever they choose."

That means, however, the clock is ticking for them to make a choice. The syndicated Millionaire, set to debut next fall, will be featured during next week's NATPE (National Association of Television Program Executives) convention in Vegas, and according to a source at Buena Vista Television, "Regis just passed, so no other decision has been made yet."

But no one seems too worried about shopping the show without a host already named. "Millionaire is such a strong show that it will do well on its own," the source insisted. "It's already cleared in 85 percent of the country anyway."

Philbin initially expressed interest in hosting the syndicated Millionaire, but he may have changed his mind when ABC hinted that the game show might not come back to prime-time next fall, or that it would replace Philbin with a younger host.

This season, Millionaire has clearly lost steam. And despite the recent executive shakeup at ABC, the network's new programming honcho, Susan Lyne, still has not said whether Millionaire is coming back.

For now, the show has been increasingly relying on so-called "celebrity" editions, but even those are starting to look questionable. Case in point: Next month's celeb installments will feature Bernie Kopell from Love Boat, Thomas Calabro from Melrose Place and Cheryl Ladd, formerly of Charlie's Angels.

Meantime, if Buena Vista needs another suggestion on who could replace Regis, may we suggest Sean "P.Diddy" Combs. The rapper-producer-fashion mogul stepped in Friday to guest host Live with Regis and Kelly, interviewing guests Chuck Norris and Willie Nelson. Wearing a conservative red sweater, Diddy did well--even yelling at Ripa when she got on his nerves...just like Regis.
